Show ROBBER USED A GUN Patrolman Killed, Slayer and Detective Fatally Wounded Omaha, Jan. If. Patrolman L, A. Smith is dead. Detective W. G? Deve-iftose Deve-iftose Is probably fatally injured. Albert Al-bert Clarke is fatally, hurt, and Betsy Smith is dangerously shot as the result re-sult of an Attempt by Clarke to hold up Anna Wilson's place on Ninth street at an early hour today. Clarke entered the Wilson placo and, at tho point of a revolver, commanded com-manded the inmates to bold up their hands. At the same moment he matched a diamond necklace from tbe neck of the Wilson woman and escaped to the street. Betsy Smith followed him. Clarke fired a shot Into In-to her shoulder, inflicting a dangerous danger-ous wound. Her screams brought Patrolman Pa-trolman Smith to the scene. Clarko at once began shooting at the olh-cer. olh-cer. firing two bullets Into his body. Dying. Smith raised himself to a sitting sit-ting posture and fired twice, one bulled bul-led taking effect in the leg. Clarko oseaped. Tho shooting occurred two blocks from the police station. A squad ot officers Immediately began a search for the wounded robber. He was located lo-cated on the Douglas bridge by Detectives De-tectives Devereese ami Helifeldt. As soon as the officers came up to Clarke he began firing. One bullet struck Devereese in the stomach, mortally wound him. Detective Heitfeldt then shot Clarke twice. At the emergency hospital Clarko said he came from Denver three days ago. ' |
