Show 21 Mamrieirs prepare for Green River Vernal Express Wednesday. August 24, 1994 The UHS boy's and girl's harrier squad tuned up for their first match of the season this coming Friday, August 26th at Green River with time trials Monday morning. According to head coach Marlon Stagg, the time trials served a dual purpose. "We wanted to get the kids introduced to timed running again in a somewhat competitive environment environ-ment before they have to go up to Green River and compete against some very tough teams. And of course the other purpose for the trials tri-als was to establish our top five runners run-ners who will compete at the varsity level." The team ran a course which began be-gan at the junior high school and went east on 100 North to 600 West, north on 600 up to 500 North, west on 500 North to the kids canal road (1500 West), south on the canal road to the Old Main street and back to the junior high school. As expected, Jeremy Tolman led the way, finishing 1st with an 18:20 over the three and change mile course. Tolman was followed in by Corey Enloe with a 19:02 time. Jeremy O'Crowley finished 3rd with a 19:27 time. Just behind Jeremy was Steve Murphy at 19:29. Finishing out the top five for the boy's team was Ryan Dart with a 19:31 finish. On the girl's side, Carrie Barlow checked in 1st with a 22:50 over the same course the boys ran. Barlow was followed by Jennie Murray at 23:24, Andrea Whiting at 23:41 and Dana Smuin at 26:13. When asked about the times, Coach Stagg shrugged off any comparisons from last year's trials. "Different course, different conditions. condi-tions. I think this year's course was a little longer than last year's. Tolman had an 18:02 last year and he is a stronger runner this year so comparisons are difficult to make at this point." "It was an average run and effort for me," Tolman said. Jeremy finished 2nd in state last year and hasn't really been pushed in practices yet His real test will come when he begins to compete against other top runners from the various programs and meets the !1T j fx?) ... t. Coach Stagg pointed out the team didn't run at full strength as last year Icttcrman Dustin Pye is recuperating recu-perating from pulled hip flexor muscles on both sides and will not be ready to go until next week. The girl's team ran without three of their members also, due to various reasons. rea-sons. "It's still very early in the season. I am pleased with what I have seen so far," Stagg said. "I think we arc going to be competitive on both the region and state level. It should be an interesting season, I'm looking forward to it" Volleyball continued from page 19 dropping a game. The other side of the draw featured a few upsets as teams began to find their groove. The championship match featured Willie's against one of those surprise sur-prise teams as Team McAffcc' advanced ad-vanced past Swell's in three hard fought games. With sunshine waning, the two teams battled it out as the Beach Boys and Ace Of Base emerged from the stereo system. The long haul of having to come back through the losers bracket proved too much of an effort for McAffee's as Willie's, consisting of Brian Willie, Dorris Salazar, Brandi Staley, Randy Shafer and Coach Pye hammered out a 15-5, 15-6 victory. vic-tory. "They were a good team," Shafer said, "we played them yesterday yes-terday (Friday) and went 15-13, 16-14. 16-14. They were obviously tired from all the matches they had to win to get back to the finals." Jollcy and the Recreation Association supplied the top three teams with gift certificates to Basin Sports. t 1 1 , Ld P j 4 ..p f ' : .1 i - i 'T "v ' "' VenulCltj SECRET WITNESS Profrim 789-8888 BLAKE GARDINER, 13-year-old son of Ted and Patty Gardiner, lands a 25-pound, 41 -inch macinaw trout in Flaming Gorge this month.
