Show Vernal Express Wednesday, August 24, 1994 19 Football and volleyball teams begin season with high hopes by Eric F. Pye Sports Writer With the Bear River game just two days away, head football coach Curg Belcher and company face a hefty challenge literally. The game will present a classic challenge chal-lenge boxer versus puncher. Big, strong, 4A Bear River against the smaller, quicker 3A Utes. Does the team have a chance? Bear River returns 8 starters from a good defensive unit, but only three from an average offensive unit. The Utes are loaded with skill type players, led by returning All Region athletes D.J. Lewis and Rhett Deets, but have a smallish line maybe. "This is probably the smallest overall team I have ever coached," Belcher said, "but we have a few players that are going to surprise people up front. Our strength offensively will be running Fallon qualifies for World Triathlon in New Zealand by Eric F. Pye Sports Writer The-Uintah Basin will have a representative rep-resentative at the World Triathlon Championships this November in New Zealand. The name is Fallon, as in Dr. Bob Fallon of the Ashley Valley Medical Center Fallons. You've probably seen him around town the last few years in either bicycle bi-cycle garb, swimsuit or running gear, although you probably took no notice as he looked just like any other exercise enthusiast What sets Dr. Fallon apart is his training regimen regi-men and 'yean of experience.' To train for a triathlon requires total dedication to the event," Fallon said. "You really don't have much time for anything else. It almost becomes be-comes a way of life." Dr. Fallon got into Triaihlons in the early 80's, training and competing compet-ing on a hit and miss basis for the next 10 years or so. He would catch regional events when he could fit them into his busy schedule, but was never dedicated enough to break into the upper echelon of competitors until h& year. 1 thought as long as I was going to train and put as much lime as t wan pulling into it already, I might as well go Just a Utile further and tee if I could be competitive on a national level," Fa! km opbtned. "Both of those kids have really picked it up a notch in the last week," Belcher said, "if we can get through the season sea-son without any major injuries, we are going to turn a few heads." With D.J. Lewis at quarterback, Deets at tailback and Jeremy Huber and Dave Lawson at fullback, the Utes have a potent running attack. Throw in wide outs Shay Bertola and Tyler Gibbons along with tight end Chris Kiever and the Ute attack becomes even more dangerous and diverse. As good as the offense can be, Coach Belcher feels the defense will be the strength of the team. The backbone of the defense will be the linebackers. Jed Labrum and Jeremy Huber lead a core of experienced and longer in my weakest area (the run) without re-injury." What that meant was Fallon could go out and subject his body to a spartan training schedule which in eluded at least 100 miles of biking 20 miles of running and IS miles swimming each week to prepare for his assault on the national leaders. The national championships were held August 14 th in Columbia, Maryland with close to 1,000 athletes ath-letes of all age groups (in increments incre-ments of 5 beginning at 30) competing. compet-ing. Fallon's age group of 50-55 included in-cluded the top four runners in the country. All competitors qualified by Finishing in the top four of one of the Tri-Fcd sanctioned events during dur-ing the year. The national triathlon featured the same length of course as the local Vernal Dinosaur Triathlon a 1.5K swim (1 mile), 40K bike (25 miles), and a I OK run (6.2 miles). "Everything came together for rnc on race day. I felt energised and confident," Fallon explained. The race began with the 1 mile sim. Fallon's split of 26 minutes was al-moa al-moa 6 minutes facr than his Vernal time and brought him out of the water in the top three and ju4 behind the number one ranked Iriathlcte in his dtviucm. The Salt Lake Tribune has picked the team to finish fin-ish 2nd in Region 10 behind Lehi, but also names the team as a possible possi-ble Dark Horse in the same vein as Union last year who ended up winning the state championship after af-ter defeating the Utes in a thrilling overtime game.
