As this long, hot summer draws to a close (hopefully), the fact that we live in the second driest state in the nation has been made painfully clear to those of us living in the Uintah Basin. With more people moving into the Western United States and given the difficulty of developing more water sources, wise use of water is becoming be-coming more and more important. Recent studies by Cooperative University Extension Services indicate indi-cate that nearly half of the water used by the average household goes to turf grass and landscape plantings and that most people overwater their yards between 20 and 40. Since we all enjoy the pleasures of lawns and gardens, how can we maintain a full, healthy landscape, and still use less water? The term 'Xeriscape' has been coined by the Denver Water Board to describe a type of gardening that emphasizes low water use in gardens. gar-dens. Unfortunately, many folks think this term means zeroscape, and instead of planting, have cut back on landscaped areas by substituting substi-tuting vast seas of plastic and bark mulch or gravel. This unfortunate types of soil is to add organic material. mate-rial. Add more. In new and established estab-lished gardens, layers of organic mulch (compost, straw, partially decomposed de-composed wood chips, bark, ground corn cobs or newspapers) around plants will help keep the roots cool and slow evaporation, in addition to improving the soil. Grass clippings should be left on the lawn. Earthworms and other soil beasties help incorporate the organic material materi-al into the soil, increasing aeration and water holding properties. Wise Irrigation - Test your sprinkler sprin-kler system, if you already have one, by placing margarine tubs or shallow tin cans around the yard and checking them after about twenty minutes. Areas that don't receive re-ceive consistent water are good candidates can-didates for conversion to low water plantings. Drip systems can be a good way to deliver water to non-turf non-turf areas. Most are easily installed and provide plenty of water to the root zones of established plants. New plantings will need deep watering, wa-tering, best done by hand, until the soil settles and they are established. Try to water early in the day to avoid the hot sun and wind. Water less frequently, but longer and deep- practice may help deter weeds, but , er, to encourage strong roots. There are four major steps you can take to lessen the amount of water you use in your landscape and, as an added benefit, lessen the amount of time you spend maintaining your yard. Planning - An important first step to cutting water use is to survey your site. Take note of the normal foot traffic traf-fic areas in your yard, including play areas for children and pets. These areas are best left in turf-grasscs turf-grasscs that can take the wear. Mark off unused lawn areas with a string and stakes or a garden hose and avoid sharp comers and small, hard to water strips. Unncedcd turf outside out-side traffic paths can be convened to drought-resistant shrub borders, flower gardens, and non-turf groundcovers that require less water and regular care. Soil Preparation - The second important im-portant step in saving water in the garden is to work on the soil. Water does not easily penetrate our clay soils, and too easily runs through sandy soils. The solution to both helps develop greater drought resis tance. Be sure that you are not watering wa-tering pavement, and turn sprinklers off before water is running into gutters gut-ters and streets. Mulching - Apply a two-inch layer lay-er of mulch around shrubs, trees, flower and vegetable gardens to reduce re-duce evaporation and keep the soil cooler. The mulch will break down, adding all-important organic material materi-al to the soil, and will help reduce weeds as well as the need for as much water. Mulch your lawn by leaving grass clippings in place when you mow. Following the above steps will reduce re-duce the amount of water you need to maintain a healthy landscape around your home. For more information infor-mation about 'Water-Wise' gardening, garden-ing, contact our County Extension Office or nurseries in the area. The library also has a number of excellent excel-lent publications about the subject A composting workshop sponsored spon-sored by the Chamber Conservation Issues Committee will be held on Saturday, Sept 10 to teach people different methods of composting.
