He got more attention than the champion, Jack Dempsey. He sailed right in and knocked out nine opponents. The critics began calling call-ing on Jimmy Bronson, his manager, to m catch him with bigger game. Jimmy Jim-my was preparing a rather ambitious program. And Martin met Sergeant Ray Smith, overseas hero, in a bout at Cleveland. It went 10 rounds and there was no knockout. Some at the ringside ring-side thought Smith had a shade, some thought Martin, and many called It a draw. Anyhow, Smith was the only man was could stick to the finish, and, besides, he floored Martin. Martin knocked Smith down three times, but he couldn't put him out. Martin's hand was injured and he retired to tho West Virginia hills to m rest up. He has knocked' out three men since. And now he's going up against Smith again at Kansas City, May 10.
