A former arm'y captain, acting as umpire, tried to settle the difference but fialcd. Carbineers Carbi-neers then made efforts to re-establish order. The crowd attacked and disarmed dis-armed them and they were obliged to flee to their barracks. The mob looted a gun shop, ocupled to railway ! stations and barricaded tho roads leading lead-ing into the city to prevent the arrival ar-rival of reinforcements. Soldiers, however, succeeded in opening the city, and order was finally restored. no |
