DES MOINES, la., May 3, The session ses-sion of tho Methodist Episcopal conference con-ference in convention here tonight was given over to a reception to the fraternal fra-ternal delegates from the British Wes-leyan Wes-leyan and Canadian Methodist church. Dr. Fluke Wiseman, of the Methodist Metho-dist mission at -Birmingham, representing represent-ing tho British Wesleyan churcu, delivered de-livered an address complimenting botn countries on the mutual friendly feeling feel-ing existing between them. He s.u.. Ratification of World League Urged. "There is one country by whom we hato to bo misunderstood, and with whom we want to stand. We are persuaded per-suaded that we may look to the United States for the fulfillment of the hope of liberties of the people for whom you have contended on tho victorious field of battle, by an early ratification, on a satisfactory basis, of those provisions pro-visions of the treaty of Versailles which establish thai great instrument for the peace of the world, the league of nations." Dr. T. Albert Moore, representing ie Methodist church of Canada, spoke of the work -of his church In Canada, and expressed the hope that the great Methodist bodies of America may soon bo united under a satisfactory plan. Dr. Moore is secretary of the general conference of the Canadian Methodist church. Unification of Church Discussed. During the day discussion on the matter of unification with the Methodist Metho-dist Episcopal south, consumed considerable con-siderable time. The report of the commission com-mission on education, which placed before the conference the matter of uniting tho two churches on a regional region-al conference plan, with the regional boundaries determined geographically, was presented without recommendation. recommenda-tion. The report was presented by Dr. A. W. Harris. Judge Ames of Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania and Dr. H. P. Sloan of New Jersey led in the debate to refer the report to tho floor of the general conference, con-ference, and Judge C. A. Pollock of North Dakota was a leader lu favor of referring It to a special committee. The body voted to submit the entire matter mat-ter to the special commlttoo for report re-port at an early date. Negro Bisnops For Church. Tho committee on episcopacy, through its chairman, Dr. David G. Downey, of New York, today obtained permission from the general conference confer-ence to hold its meetings in executive session. It -is very probable mat tins committee will in the near future con-'sidor con-'sidor and report on the matter of electing one or more negro bishops for the church. Delegates representing the. fifteen genoral conference districts of Meuio-dism Meuio-dism will hold district meetings on Tuesday for the purpose of selecting persons for the various permanent board3 of the church. |
