Show Southern Utah Miller Honored In Canada Archibald Gardner, grandfather of Reed H. Gardner, who until recently re-cently was manager or the Southern Utah Power Company in Cedar City, Is honored in the erection or a monument recently erected at Al-vlnston, Al-vlnston, Ontario. Canada. The monument, erected by the L D S Church and the Utah Trail and Landmarks Association, was dedicated dedi-cated on August 16, 1946. The Monument, now known as the "Nauvoo Road Monument," Is made from a large mill stone used in a grist mill constructed and operated op-erated In the Villagt of Alvlnston by Mr. Oardner. He was one of the first settlers of Alvlnston and built the first gristmill in what was then Brooke Township. In the year 1843 John Burrow-man, Burrow-man, a missionary representing the Church, came Into Alvlnston and converted Mr. Oardner, his family, and others to the faith. Later persecution per-secution became so bitter against him that in the year 1843 he sold his mill and leaving his family in Alvlnston set out on foot for Nauvoo Nau-voo Illinois. He crossed the river between Canada and Michigan at what is now called Point Edward just as the ice from the river was beginning to break up. The following follow-ing year he sent for his family, who with a group of converts from that section cut a road through the forest for-est from Alvlnston to a place called call-ed Watford to be used In making the Journey to Nauvoo. The road was called by the people around that section of the country The Nauvoo Nau-voo Road." A Highway over that same territory still carries that name. Archibald Gardner made his way with his family across the plains into Salt Lake Valley. He spent most of his life throughout Utah and surrounding territory building grist mills and saw mills. Several of the mills built by him were in the Cedar Valley and Mountains. On September 6 a meeting was held at the monument with Elder Taft Benson of the Council or the Twelve present, at which time a bronze tablet was attached telling or the above incidents. |
