Show 4 i WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. OCTOBER 1 2, 1 978 oft Grass Oa Are Hon Holds First Homecoming Braves Gear For Sky View Battle On The - By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL The main thing on the coachs mind at Bountiful High this week is how to get their team to take this game with Sky View weeks ago one of the local high school coaches wanted me to start a weekly poll in the Clipper or Reflex in which I would rate the top teams in the state. A few Against Tough Barts By DAVE WIGHAM Cross school in that this is - Two WOODS CROSS weeks ago it looked like the Woods Cross and Davis game Although no one has officially graduated from the school many of the alumni that attended before going on to Bountiful or Viewmont are expected back. The fact that a win becomes a must situation for the Wildcats might be an added bonus for Coach Hawkins and his troops. No team likes to be put in that type of situation but another loss in league piay could ruin any hopes the Cats have of gaining their first-eve-r state football berth. -- would very well mean the league championship. Now all of a sudden it turns out that the Wildcats must win in order to keep their hopes alive while the Darts are at the top of Region Four. GOING INTO the Box Elder in game the Wildcats were league play and 0 on the year but then something happened. The Cats lost to the Bees in a close game and then the following Wednesday they were ambushed by the Ogden crew. When the dust had settled after these two encounters the Wildcats found themselves in the middle of the pack with a league record. Meanwhile the Darts were going about their business in downing the South Cubs and 2-- 4-- 2-- 2 then the Bears from Bear River and now the Darts find themselves at the top of the league with no one but Logan to keep them company. PART OF the Wildcat problem was caused when Larry Miller a linebacker for the BYU football team the past four years has an excellent chance of becoming the first professional football player to have graduated from Bountiful High. By DAVE WICHAM - A lot Of Davis PROVO County football players continue their playing days after graduation from prep school in the college ranks but very seldom have any of them made it past the college level. NEXT YEAR might be a first when Larry Miller graduates from Brigham Young University and his services will be up for grabs by the professional teams. Larry has been a standout linebacker for the Cougars for the past four years and indications are that the professional people have had their eyes on hinj for that period of time. LARRY STARTED his football career at Bountiful High but he earned more of a reputation on the basketball floor than he did on the football field. In fact as a sophomore Larry was trying to decide whether or not to play football. He went to his friend Coach Phil Olsen and asked for his feelings and thoughts. Phil to this toy still remembers the day when he told Larry, "your future is in basketball or baseball. For some reason though Larry stayed involved in the Braves' football program for the next three years. HIS VARSITY coach, Paul Waite, had nothing but praise for Miller. Coach Waite him- self had gone through the high school, college and then professional scene in football and still noted that Larry "was consistently the hardest hitter he had seen. It was during his playing days at Bountiful that Larry earned his nickname of Razor, simply because he used to cut people in half with his tackling. STILL LARRY wasnt the biggest player on the Brave club, in fact in his senior year at Bountiful he was listed as 65 and 180 pounds, and that was soaking wet and in full football uniform. Currently Larry is listed as 6'5" and 230 pounds. He credits the weightlifting program at Brigham Young for his weight increase, not to mention his tremendous strength increase. I never lifted in high school, although now I wish I did, but at college 1 started and really got into it and now even when COMPLETELY Hit NO SHRINKAGE ECONOMICAL ODOR FREE LAWS my playing days are over I still plan on lifting weights to stay in shape. HE PLAYED a little varsity as a freshman for the Cougars but then became a regular starter in his sophomore year. It was during that year that he became involved in a battle with another sophomore linebacker, the middle backer for the Cougars, Rod Wood. As sophomores we had a rivalry going, but now we don't there is no real jealousy between us. Larry is the weakside linebacker for BYU and that's where he wants to be, the middle backer is always getting double teamed and has to watch for the run, the strong side backer gets tied up with the tight end but where I'm at no one really ties me up and I can utilize my speed more and cover the backs running (ass patterns. ITS THAT speed aspect that has the professional people talking, although hes as big as he is, Larry still runs the 40 yard dash in 4.7 seconds, which anyone will tell you is a great time for a linebacker that big. "The pros have talked to me a little, mostly to the coaches, and I think I have a great shot at making a team. Dallas has shown a tot of interest but then so have a lot of other clubs. Ive been told Ill be drafted high next year but by which club 1 dont know. LARRY WENT on to note that if he did have a choice, say the free agent look, he would go to either Denver or San Diego, two clubs and cities he really likes. Razor is still an athlete in that he stays involved with basketball quite a bit on campus. He also just finished a movie in which he plays the bad guy at a local high school, he stars in, of all things, wrestling. COACH LAVELL Edwards believes he has the best set of linebackers in the WAC with Miller having the best year of ail of them. Indeed the professionals are chomping at the bits to get a linebacker that is 6'S', 230 pounds and is fast. Plus he has the reputation of being a hard hitter. So next year Larry Miller could very well become the first player from Bountiful High to make it into the pro ranks in football. FAST EFFICIENT RESIDUE FREE FAST SERVICE running back Jeff Ostler came down with a popped kneecap and wasn't a hundred percent against the Box Elder club, but the Cats are not a one man team so alt the blame cant be placed on that. Davis too was having their with injury problems linebacker and fullback Kevin Criddle suffering from a hip pointer and Mike Mounteer along with Mike Hoskins suf- fering from leg injuries. Reports are though that these players will be ready to go full strength against the Wildcats. THIS GAME also marks another first for the Woods ftlegion CHEM-DR- Y CARPET CLEANING By DAVE WIGHAM - With the BOUNTIFUL region race in a four way tie, Bonneville, Bountiful, Layton and Roy the only thing left to decide in Region One is which order these four teams will finish. THE TOP club from the region gets an automatic berth into the state quarterfinals and the next three get playoff berths to qualify for the quarter-finalThese four clubs are two full games ahead of the rest, with three to play so its almost safe to say these four will be fighting it out for the order of finish and playoff berths. TWO BIG games are on tap in the next two weeks. This week Bonneville is at Roy and then next week Layton is at Bountiful. If the league ends y in a tie then the champion will be decided by d the result of the battle between those two dubs. For example if Bonneville and Bountiful tie then the Lakers would be number one because they beat the Braves. If Roy and Layton tie then the s. i 3. SCOTT Stewart went down in the Viewmont game but doctors have indicated that it was a bruised nerve in the leg and he should be ready to go IF THEY do this then the Braves will be in for a very long afternoon up in Cache Valley. If the Bountiful coaches can get the players thinking about this week then the Bobcats can forget any upset notions, the Braves, simply have too much talent for Sky View. YOU EXPLAIN to me, in that same poll why Bountiful is number three and Bonneville is number six when the Lakers won the game. True maybe it was a fluke but they won anyway. Then the Lakers are sixth and Layton is eighth and the Lancers beat Bonneville. Im SOMETIMES A win doesnt always help either. A ample of weeks ago Bountiful and Roy were tied for fifth in one of the polls and then the Braves beat the Royals and dropped off of the poll the following week. The only thing polls are good for is to write columns like this about. Ill tell you who I think is number one on Saturday, Nov. 18, right after the state finals. has been at quarterback where Coach Hawkins has been locking at three players. Senior Todd Bailiff, junior and Earnshaw Mark sophomore Kevin Nitzel have all played the spot at one time or another but none of them has taken control of the club like the coaches would have have given up the club. People like Dave Powell, Greg Tuttle, John Montgomery and Stu Egan will need to play well for the Wildcats to win. Offensively the quarterback, whoever it may be, will have to be in top form, and move the club when have. Robert Ward Kent Balls (6-(6-- 2 (6-- BOUNTIFUL should come away from Cache Valley with a smile on their faces and a win on their side of the ledger, only their own preparation could prevent such an occurrence. Sky View can be a good club, especially at home, if taken lightly. LYNN MUIR is looking to need the win, they were flat emotionally against Ogden but should be sky high for the Davis game. The Darts meanwhile will simply be the Davis team of old, hard to stop on offense. This one would be a tossup, but with the Cats needing the win give them a slight edge. ee cf fountain Home In Farmington By BARRY KAWA Competitive golfers and a Skyview, Bonneville, tiful and Davis - losing only to powerful Weber.
