Show Monument Soon to Mark Trail of Donner Party Parry The men and women who blazed I Ithe the trail into Salt Lake valley as members of the Donner party In 1846 and his a year Brigham Young band of Mormon pioneers entered the valley will be by the Utah Pioneer Trails and Landmarks association and the Grantsville high school which will join together in erecting a monument in their honor John D. D Giles secretary of the association association as as- Wednesday announced that thata a monument eight feet teet high bearing a bronze plaque will be unveiled within the next two or three weeks atthe at atthe atthe the point in Tooele county where the theold theold theold old Donner trail crosses the present Lincoln highway He said the marker will be built of white calcite which is being quarried on the old trail three miles east of the monument site Erection of the monument recalls the historic march f the band of at pioneers plo pio from the east They left as part of the Hastings group and when they reached Fort Bridger they were in a separate party under the leadership leadership leadership leader leader- ship of George and Jacob Donner From Fort Bridger they followed practically the same route as the Mormon pioneers and camped near near the state fair tair grounds on the Jordan river Some members of the party were left at Donners Donner's lake in California while others continued westward Most of ot those left behind on account of severe storms perished before rescue rescue res res- cue parties returned for them A large group gr up is expected at the unveiling |
