Show Wildcats win thriller in OT By TOM HARALDSEN SALT LAKE CITY-" If this had been a banquet, they could have served turnovers to everyone Those words from one Woods Cross assistant described the Wildcats 'wild and wacky 19-16 overtime victory over Granite Friday Fri-day night, a game which saw both teams shoot themselves in the foot several times. The Wildcats looked in control early, scoring on their first drive when Kevin Case hauled in a 43 yard TD pass from Ryan VanAlfen. Kyle Lavender's PAT made it 7-0 early in the first. But the Farmers served notice of their own on the ensuing kickoff. The ball was fumbled on a reverse, but picked up by Granite's Nathan Clayton, who ran 92 yards for a touchdown. The game was knotted at 7-all, a sign of things to come. Woods Cross fumbled on its next possession, but VanAlfen picked off Granite quarterback Jeff Simmons at the Wildcat 41. He completed a 1 6 yard pass to Marcus Rhoton for a first down, but the key play came when Dave Conners broke through the secondary for a 42 yard gain to the Farmer five. Case scored three plays later, but the kick was wide, and Woods Cross took a 13-7 halftime lead into the locker room. Granite tied the game in the third quarter after blocking a punt at the Wildcat 12. Simmons rebounded from a sack by Mike Jacetta and hit Lenny Crouch with a pass to the one, from where Jeremy Blank dove in with 3:16 left in the quarter. David Schneider's PAT was wide, however, leaving die score at 13-alL The Wildcats appeared poised to win it in regulation when James Larson blocked a Granite punt with 57 seconds left and returned it to the Farmer 13. Woods Cross fumbled the ball as time expired, forcing overtime. Granite scored first, moving just three yards in three plays before Schneider hit on a 25 yard field goal. The Wildcats now had their chance, and VanAlfen hit Nick Lafeber on first down for a seven-yard seven-yard gain to the three. Kevin Case plunged to the one, Woods Cross got to the six-inch line on third down, and VanAlfen apparently scored on the final play. But wait... Granite was guilty of encroachment, encroach-ment, moving the ball to the three-inch three-inch line. VanAlfen again kept, crossed the goalline, fumbled die ball, then recovered for the win. Woods Cross is now 2-1 in league and 3-2 overall |
