Show OLD SLAG DUMPS ART PROFITABLE Upwards of 20,000 tons from one of the oldest smelter dumps of the state at Stockton was shipped last 3ummer by Ben Hampton, one of the old time mining operators of Utah. This slag dump was at the site of the old Chicago smelter, located by the big pond or lake to the southwest ot the camp proppr The old smelter was In operation probably forty or fifty years ago Every vestige of it has long since passed away. Only the sagebrush-covered dump marks the site. Mr Hampton said yesterday that the stuff carries an average of $7 to $12 to the ton. On most of the product prod-uct which he shipped there was a net smelter return of from $5 to 57 a ton. That would amount to over $100,000 The values were mainly in silver and lead. The ore for the plant came principally from the orlg lnal mining propositions which made Stockton famous In the early days It was one of the oldest camps west of the Mississippi. Since those days the methods of extraction of values in ores have been wonderfully lm proved. Mr. Hampton says there are several sev-eral thousand tons of profitable slag still left. As soon as the weather conditions will permit and the frost is out of the ground, the balance of the old dumps will be forwarded to market oo |
