Show WIRELESS BETWEEN SftLT LAKE GITY ID OGDEN Tn Tuesday's Issue cf the Salt Lake Telegram. Sidney Sperry, an amateur wireless telegraph operator of Salt Lake City, takes exception to an opinion given ahout two weeks ago by two Ogden operators, regarding Sperry s alleged receipt of messages from Point Loraa, California The Ogden operators said that, in their helief. Sperry had received parts of messages from their machines Instead of from Point Loma. In his latest talk for publication, the Salt Lake youth says that It would be impossible impos-sible for him to have caught a message mes-sage from Ogden as his wireless set has a minimum wave length, which from the way he puts It, would mean that it would not catch a message coming from so short a distance as from Ogden to Salt Lake C. Peeklnhaugb. the Ogden oper ator whose opinion Is disputed by Sperry, says that the latter falls down badly in making the above statement as a receiving apparatus would catch a message coming a mile as easily as a thousand miles and that the minimum wave length applied entirely en-tirely to a sending apparatus. Sperry also said that the Ogden man's wireless wire-less set did not have sufficient power to send messages to Salt Lake City. In taking exception to this Mr Peck-inbanch Peck-inbanch gave the following statement which he said would make clear to anyone who had any understanding of wireless telegraphy at all, the fact that his machine would send messages mess-ages from 75 to 100 miles. "The set which I am using is composed com-posed of a Murdock apparatus, which has seen active service, both In sending send-ing and receiving messages.at a dist ance of 25 miles over land and 7.". miles over water at night This was on the eastern coast when worked with only 12 volts of storage battery through a two-Inch high-grade Induction Induc-tion coil, without a helix and without a condenser. The aerial was the same size that I am using at present. The spark coil alone, without any accessories, ac-cessories, will carry from ten to twenty miles, if provided with a condenser and helix, from 35 to 40 miles with 10 or 12 volts of battery and when coupled In addition to the helix and condenser, to 110 volts alternating al-ternating current through a Gerns-back Gerns-back electrolytic interrupter and two 2-quart Ley den jars shunted across the spark gap. like I was using on the night that Mr Sperry of Salt Lake said he received messages from Point Loma and San Francisco, will easllv carry one hundred miles and farther on a favorable night, over land. This high power is used very seldom as I find a low battery through the condenser con-denser and helix gives much more satisfactory service for a distance of a few miles, which is all that we require for our purpose." Mr. Pecklnbaugh said that It was nothing remarkable to catch mess ages from the coast, with an aerial tuch as Sperry claims to have, pro- j Tiding that all requirements neceo-sary neceo-sary for a long-dinstance receiving apparatus are equal. He said that he would be working his outfit to its capacity during the next few nights and hopes to get into communication with the Salt Lake youth. nn |
