Show rilE HOMICIDE AT ALT A. The following partie-'krs- relative to the homicide at Alt.h7c reached us: The parties to the fatal affray were II. C. Miller, night watchman at AJta, and Wm. Hawes, the deceased. It appears that the latter, on the pight of the 2nd instant, forcibly broke into the houie of Fritz Adolpby, at which Miller was employed, and demanded something to eat, but being somewhat iDebriated and boisterous he was refused re-fused accomodation and ejected from the premises. In these proceedings or subsequently and somehow, Miller became be-came invoWed.aQd on the evening ofthe 3rd they met in the front of the restaurant restau-rant and salooo, both armed, and after a few words the firing commenced. It is asserted that Hawes fired the first shot. The result was that Hawes received re-ceived four shots, two in the right breast below the Dipplc, one in the left breast just below the nipple, ranging rang-ing diagonally through the body and passing out under the right Bhoulder blade, and another through tho wrist and penetrating the groin. He was almost instantly killed, but found time in the melee to fire one Bhot which entered the hand of Miller between the thumb and forefinger, inflicting a painful but not daDgerous wound. The body of Hawes was removed to the house of Mr. Morrisey, and Miller was placed under the care of Br. Bcvan. under whose professional care the bullet was extracted and tho patient will probably soon recover, The general opinion seems to be that the homicide was justifiable. P., in Littlo Cottonwood District, in said county, upon the body of Wil-, liam Hawes, there lying dead, by the jurors whose names are hereto subscribed, sub-scribed, tho said jurors upon their oaths do say, that the deceased, William Wil-liam Hawes, came to his death by pistol shots firrd by H. C. Miller, on the evening of November 3, li72. J. C, McManus, K. K Thompson, JonN Hale. II awes came to this Territory from. Montana via Austin. He was born in New York, was about thirty years of age, and has a brother and sister living in San Francisco, or in tho vicinity. Ho is said to have been, when not under the influence of liquor, a peaceable and industrious man, but when inebriated a desperate and dangerous dan-gerous man. Miller has here the reputation rep-utation of beiDg always peaceable and quiet. The funeral of the unfortunate man who was killed took placo yesterday from the Sherman houso in this city. |
