HE women voters of the United 44r 1 States stand squarely behind I prc-sidenL Wilson in this inter-J inter-J national crisis." Such was the verdict broug-ht to the women of Salt Lake yesterday by Mrs. Kmnia Smith DeVoe of Tacoma, Wash., president of tlie National Council of Women Voters. Mrs. DeVoe stopped in Halt Lake yesterday yes-terday on the way home from Washington Washing-ton to confer with Mrs. Lily C. Wrolsten-holrne. Wrolsten-holrne. president of t he Utah branch of tiie council, and other officers and members mem-bers of the local oi ionization with reference refer-ence to the meeting of Lhe national body, wi-.ich is to be held here during the summer. sum-mer. Li an interview Mrs. DeVoe said: Throughout the east both the men and the women are very much agitated agi-tated over recent developments in our national affairs, and dining my visit I heard but one sentiment expressed thai of giving president Wilson full power and authority for the protection protec-tion of our commerce and of American Ameri-can lives upon the high seas. They have the fullest confidence ;u the integrity in-tegrity and the ability of the president' presi-dent' to avert war if there is the slightest, chance to do so and still maintain the honor of the country. Look to the West. To the women of the west, 'however, 'how-ever, the w omen of the east look for the fullest expression of the sentiment senti-ment of the women of the country. Wo have the right of suffrage and are given voice equal with the men in tlie affairs of government. On every hand throughout the east 1 h pre ma y be beard expressions of deepest mntempt for the. handful of men who tnwariea uie win ol congress con-gress during the closing hours of the sixty-fourth session. The people of ' the east and middle west are up in arms; they resent most keenly tlie apparent duplicity of the German government gov-ernment and the wholesale mui der authorized by that country in its wanton warfare upon neutral vessels upon the high aeas. i The National Council of Women Voters upholds President Wilson in j the action he haw taken and has so i notified him by telegraph. In reply j I have received a personal letter from ! the president expressing his deepest j appreciation of the attitude of tlie women voters. j We do not want war if it can be I avoided and the lives of A mericans j and American shipping may be other- i wise protected. But if war must come, I the National Council of Women Aroters will stand squarely behind the presi- I (lent and its members will offer them- j selves to perform any service which may be of most benefit to the na- tion. ! Governor Is Invited. j At noon Mrs. DeVoe was the guest of Mrs. Wolstenholme and other officers and members of the Utah council at luncheon at the Hotel Utah.
