Show CARRANZ.VS ELECTION. General Yeriusliano Carranza has been elected president of Mexico and the republic, has a constitutional government govern-ment for the first time since the foul murder of Madero and Suarez at (he instigation of Huerta, Bin nquet. and Kelix Diaz. We do not entertain a very high opinion of Carranza. but so far he has succeeded in carrying out bis plans, and now that he has been intrusted with power by the people of Mexico we arc not disposed to be critical if he rules according to the, constitution of the country, suppresses the bandit bands in the northern states and does not interfere inter-fere with the rights of the Mexican citizens to worship Coil after the dictates dic-tates of their own consciences. The Mexican people havo become I very tired of the long-drawn out revolutionary revolu-tionary uprisings and the changes in the government hy force, and no doubt that feeling aecounls in large measure for the triumph of I'arranza. at the pedis. His eVrtioji was practieally unanimous, not Ln..eau.,e there was an enthusiasm over his candidacy, but because there did not seem to be any other path to peace. Xow that he has been elected, however, we suppose he will be more or less loyally supported even by the members mem-bers of the old Cientifico party, who aided Porfirio Diaz in holdintr on to the presidential chair so long that he became be-came dictator and had made arrangements arrange-ments to pass the honor along when summoned by death. These same Cien-tiiicos Cien-tiiicos have had their lesson. They were silent partners in the assassination of Madero and they will be compelled to pay taxes for the balance of their lives to make good the damage caused by the series of revolutions that have been going go-ing on ever since, and it is right that they should be taxed to the limit. It will be only a short time before the Mexican congress convenes, and then we shall be able to get a line upon the political situation in the republic and also bo able to forecast the future to some extent. If it is the intention to reestablish re-establish the republic upon a firm basis, the first thing to be done will be the equipping of an army large enough to wipe out all the bandit bands operatiug in various parts of Mexico, for until this is done there can be no such thing as peace and there will always be a possibility of beeonling embroiled with the United States on account of border raids. With that accomplished, it should be easy to restore normal conditions. |
