By the order of Secretary Robeson, discontinuing the position of Port Admiral, except for the port of New York, the following named officers are relieved from duty : Bear Admiral Goldsborough, port admiral ad-miral at Washington ; S. L. Breeze, at Philadelphia; Hiram Spaulding, at Boston : Joshua K. Sands, at Norfolk; Tlenrv K. Thatcher, at Portsmouth ; Thomas T. ' 'raven, at San Francisco. All of the above officers, except Golds-borough, Golds-borough, are on the retired list. Rear Admiral Strin?ham will be relieved from duty as port admiral at New York on ihe first of October. The census reports from Florida, Kentucky, New York, New Hampshire, Hamp-shire, Connecticut, Minnesota and Ohio show tho work substantially completed com-pleted in these States, and it is expected expec-ted the returns will be received from nearly all the districts by the 10th of September. A few subdivisions will send in scattering returns from that date until the 1st of October. About 7,500,000 names are already received at the census office. Half-a-million a day has been the average of the past week, which will probably increase to a million a day during the present week. |
