Show vKKK? jJmmmt jHn mER Suzanne CI an in Students Win 'Scholar' Honors In a program designed after the existing Deseret News-KSL Awards, southern Utah honored its students of academic excellence in a ceremony at Southern Utah State College. The first annual Southwest Sterling Scholar Awards received participation from eight area high schools and some Teresa Breinholt 52 seniors in attendance for the presentations. Noted as top scholar in the foreign language division for southern Utah was Suzanne Clanin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John O. Clanin and Mr and Mrs. Larry Jenkins of Panguitch. 9r kvffl ' fHHB? ily Jolcne Nelson Honored as runner-up in the homcmaking division was another Panguitch senior, Teresa Breinholt, daughter of Mr. and Mr.v Gerald Breinholt. Runner-up in the field of business education honors went to Jolene Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson, Cannonvilh The presentations at the SUSC Music Hall were made by representatives of Garfield. Washington, Kane and Iron school districts, following a day of interviews and judging by Dixie and SUSC colleges and the Utah State Board of Education. Schools participating in the scholastic competition included Panguitch, Bryce Valley, Cedar City, Kanab, Valley, Parowan, Dixie and Hurricane Winners and runners-up received sterling silver Sterling Scholar pins while all other nominees received embossed certificates from Deseret News and KSL. As winner in Iter division of foreign language. Miss Clanin received a cash award of $200. while runners-up received cat.h awards of $100 each to be applied toward their future, post high school education. Winners and runners-up have the additional advantage of being offered tuition scholarships to many state universities. |
