Show BYU Degree HATCH - Brent W. Turek, mental health specialist in Kanab for the Utah Department of Social Services has been awarded a doctoral degree in educational psychology from Brigham Young Un-viersity. He received the degree at the 104th commencement exercises April 20 in the Marriott Center at which 2,202 degrees were awarded. A total of 163 doctoral degrees were given, 124 of which were Juris Doctor degrees from the fourth law school class. Dr. Turek's dissertation is entitled "The Effects of Alcohol and Placebo on Simulated Driving." The study was done to determine the effects of alcohol and placebos on the ability to operate a driving simulator. Alcohol was shown to affect poor drivers' ability to steer. Placebos were determined to affect signaling abilities the most. A 1963 graduate of Panguitch High School, Dr. Turek earned an AS degree at Dixie College in 1967, a BA degree In sociology at Southern Utah State College in 1969 and the MA degree in educational psychology at the University of Utah in 1972. He is the son of Edward and Julie Turek of Hatch. Dr. Turek was All-State and All-Conference in basketball and scholar-. athlete of the year in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He has also conducted several large workshops for educators and youth and served as student representative on the acceptance committee for the School of Educational Psychology at the University of Utah. He served a mission to Uruguay for the LDS Church, has held numerous positions in the church, and now serves as Elders' Quorum president in the Kanab Third Ward. |
