Show LONGEST TU NNEL IN THEWORLD Jt Wilt He Over Twelve Miles, Through the Simplon Mountain. The longest, tunnel in the world will be thai now to be constructed through the Simplon. According to the final plans adopted it will have a length of T3.0 miles, or 3.1 miles more than the St. Gotbard tunnel. The northern mouth will be situated about 2,300 yards south of Brieg, at the little village vil-lage of Ira Ratfi, and the southern 600 yards beyond Jvelle, just below the present wall gallery. About one-half of the tunnel facing north will have an incline of 1.5 per 1,000 yards, just sufficient suffi-cient to cause the water to run off, while the southern portions will have an incline of 3.5 per l.OoO yards. The process of boring will be the same as that folluwed with the Arlberg tunnel. Workshops and depots are to be established estab-lished on the right bank of the Rhone, close to the northern entrance, at a cost of 4.000,000 francs, The power of work, ing is estimated at 1,450 horsepower viz.: 520 for boring purposes, 780 for ventilation and 200 for electric lighting, light-ing, etc. i. e., at the end of the tunnel alone, for which purpose the river Alassa is to be dammed in. At the southern side a similar station is to be c- tablished, which is calculated to cost 3.t!0o,0u0 francs and to furnish 2,700 horsepower, derived from damming up the river Cairasca. The total cost of the remaining works is estimated at S0,o00,0o0 francs, of which 30,000,000 francs are contributed by the various slates interested in the scheme. In order to facilitate the undertaking, ft track is to be hud on the road between Dornodossala and Iselle, while m the borings are to be used Brandt's rotary I boring machines. It is calculated that the work will occupy eight years and a half. |
