General Funston to be in Command of Expedition to Capture Villa, But Will Not Lead American Troops in Person. Washington.-General Funston,-under orders from President Wilson to hunt down Villa's bandit army in northern Mexico, is moving his troops behind a veil of rigid secrecy. War department officials, who had given the border commander a free hand in "working out details of the expedition, ex-pedition, made it clear that they regarded re-garded it imperative to success that all information which might aid Villa in eluding the American forces must be guarded scrupulously. Instructed by the war department at Washington that he was not to personally per-sonally command the troops that will search for Francisco Villa, Major General Funston, the commander of the southern department, has arranged details of the expedition and planned for the safeguarding of the entire Mexican border. General Funston has announced, however, that while he will not lead the troops in person, that an officer subordinate to him will lead the men a.gainst Villa, and that he has instructions in-structions to trail the bandit -leader to his lair, and capture him, dead or alive. General John Pershing will lead the American troops in the pursuit of the attackers of Columbus. Both Generals Funston and Pershing Per-shing are known in the army as "get-, ters." Directing their . operations from Washington is Major Genera Hugh L. Scott, chief of staff, whose, reputation along the same lines had been established before either Fun. ston or Pershing they are both, young generals had ever worn an officer's uniform. |
