melody or harmony fell upon his ear like a charm At theBge of fifteen young Gllmore was t music toucher in Ireland Athlone being a large garrison town there were generally gener-ally three or Jour British regiments quartered quar-tered there and the boy could always be c found among the band musicians A retired re-tired bandmaster and famous musician r named Heating took the musical prodigy in F hand and put him through a course of harmony c har-mony cud instrumentation so that in a f saort tinie he could play upon any instrument instru-ment in the Athlone amateur band of f which he was a member and for which he composed several pieces It was the opinion of his teacher Keat ing that he would find a wider field for his musical abilities in America inasmuch as he bad already arrived at great proficiency profi-ciency on the cornet and he accordingly determined to try the experiment CAMS TO BOSTON He arrived in Bcston at the age of nineteen nine-teen and at once accepted a situation in the music store of the Messrs Ordway Sis services as a cornet player were immediately im-mediately sought for and his first engagement engage-ment was as leader of a newly oreanized band in to Boston i A few years later he conceived the idea of the great National Peace Jubilee t Tunica was held in Boston and its successful success-ful accomplishment was looked upon as something almost miraculous creating naturally a national interest but attracting attract-ing the attention of the civilized world Three years after the first jubilee which was entirely national in character Gilmore
