Show POLITICAL CIRCLES Review X of Work Done During I I l the Past Week I I TiE SITUATION IN NEW YORK I Cleveland Now in That City anti Enthusiastic Enthus-iastic Over the Prospects Ohio Campaign Opsnid NEW YORK Oct 1The week politically closes upon the situation congested with possibilities and that the possibilities of the coming week may be problematic The foreground of the political field at present is occupied chiefly by the Democratic generals Tho Republican forces lie back and watch and wait for the movements of I their adversaries The gathering here of the Democratic state and national committeemen com-mitteemen and the presence of Cleveland and Rill all contribute to the growing interest in-terest of the present Democratic movements move-ments hero The arriving of the Democratic Demo-cratic clubmen for next weeks meeting also adds to the spectacle of the Democratic Demo-cratic sortie Cleveland has not yet decided how long be will stay l New York His stay will be determined in a measure by the progress pro-gress of the work on his new city residence resi-dence In any event he will remain here till Tuesday or Wednesday and attend the convention of the national association of conventon Democratic clubs Since his arrival he has seen nearly all the Democratic leaders of the city and state and a largo number of prominent politicians engaged in the work of the national campaign THE POLITICAL Sin S-in all parts of the country have been laid before Cleveland by the Democratic notional tional campaign committee and h is said to be well pleased with the outlook especially espec-ially in this state and the northwestern states which the Democrats hope to carry He told Don M Dickinson yesterday that ho considered Wisconsin Michigan Minnesota Minne-sota and Illinois debateable ground and expressed great pleasure with the work of the Chicago branch headquarters Cleveland has so far refused to interfere inter-fere with the work of the Syracuse convention con-vention men His friends say it is his intention In-tention to keep his hands off local politics and leave the municipal fight to tbe mon engaged in it He is confident the state will Democratic whether there is wi go a third local ticket or not The talk about his being adverse to a ticket in opposition to Tammany Is pure conjecture based on the statements of Chairman Harrity and Dickinson who are supposed to express Clevelands sentiments sentments It is not altogether certain yet that a third ticket will Do put in the field Last night the Syracuse convention men continued contin-ued the committee which called on the national na-tional committee and instructed it to confer with other Democratic organizations This may or may not mean a combination with county Democrats and Vooraees Democrats Demo-crats The question will bo decided during the doming week The general opinion is today that i Cleveland pursues the policy of noninterference Tammany will have a fight on ithands this year Croker says he does not care whether there is a third ticket or not so far as Tammany is concerned con-cerned but ho is apprehensive that among Democrats it might result in the loss of the te legislature and United States senator The state committee is apparently taking no interest in local affairs Its work is confined to the state above Harlem river I has left New York citys affairs to Tammany Tam-many hal I is known however that Howard Murphy jr and Lieutenant Governor Sheehan are opposed to putting up Democratic tickets iu this city |
