Show JONES A CAVALIER I V 5 S The Evangelist Is Eloquent Outside I Out-side the Pulpit The Southern Woman Nearly Perfect Northerners North-erners Are a little East 1 lie V Race Question I For THE SUNDAY HERALD Copyrighted V INTER vIewed Sam r V Jones the other day and 55s I asked him I to answer this question ques-tion V How does the southern type of womanhood 5 V wo-manhood differ dif-fer from the typo north of L f Mason and Dixonslinef Well tho J I < Y womanhood I of the two sections differ about as the manhood man-hood of the two sections each having their characteristics which perhaps are largely due to customs and environments tI he meditatively med-itatively replied Socially the people south have always been much more hospitable hospit-able than those at the north There is what we call southern blood which boils at much lower temperature than that of the north Southern womanhood surrounded sur-rounded by the same influence has developed devel-oped largely in sentiment and feeling with southern manhood She cares more for character and less for chattels She worships wor-ships mammon less and true manhood more In choosing a husband tho question of chattels and riches enters very little into her thoughts She loves the man she loves and will inako any sacrifices to Rive herself to him and when she does give herself with constant loyalty and fidelity to his interests she is his wife indeed If sho makes a bad bargain she sticks much closer to it than her northern sister In many states marriage seems to be a legal contract and when either party becomes tired of its binding force application ism is-m de to the divorce courts and that which was ona becomes two I believe old maids are moro numerous in the south than in the north An old maid is in better shape than an illy matched married woman The old maid has nothing and the married woman has something she doesnt want Politically the southern woman is not nearly so Jar advanced as the nortb Woman suffrage is desired much more by the northern woman but the southern woman seems to prefer woman suffering to woman suffrage Tho heroism and fortitude of southern women reached its culmination between the years IbGO and 1S70 Their devotion de-votion to their husbands and fathers has never been questioned but their loyalty lo the southern confederacy and their heroism hero-ism and fortitude in giving up their loved ones to the urmy and to death has perhaps nover been equaled in the history of womanhood woman-hood In 10000 homes in the south the husband hus-band end father bade wife and children goodbye frequently leaving them with only meagre support and yet the wife with patience and frugality maintained the homo and provided every nesessary thing for the comfort and welloeing of the children whose father was at the front uIn these years of struggle and economy our women learned a lesson that in after years made them domestic in habit and economical in dress in life Of course there are exceptions to this rule Many of our southern women whoso Husbands may or may not have money run to extremes of dress But tt is true of the rank and tile of southern womanhood that they dress modestly and largey economically In all our southern cities we have vhat the world calls the elite or fragment of tho fOdr hundred who run to the same extreme ex-treme of dress and want of dross that has made womanhood in many places the leaders lead-ers of the immodesty of the age The animosities created by the late unpleasantness un-pleasantness linger perbaps longer with southern womanhood than with southern manhood The devastated homes the squandered fortunes the buried loved ones the memories of these seem to linger with many of our southern women Woman is naturally a good hater She is not a good marksman with the pistol nor has she entered the arena as a prize tighter but she has sentiment which if aroused exprcssseo itself in hatred just as true as death itself Not very many of our southern south-ern women cherish any bitterness or unkind un-kind feeling toward the north The south today is as loyal to the stars and stripes as any section of this Union There are some things said and done that occasionally uncover un-cover the smouldering remains and it breaks out anew in implications and expressions ex-pressions of resentment When the Force bill is talked of no southern man or woman can get shouting happy The ideal southern woman is refined in her tastes warm in her sympathies profound pro-found in her likes and dislikes modest frequently fre-quently to a fault The fast woman In the south is looked upon if not with contempt at least with a good deal I of caution by the great number of her sisters about her I doubt if in club life and such pastimes as the german or round dance tho wine resorts re-sorts etc the southern woman will overcome over-come to tho front BO prominently as many of her sisters in tho north Whatever in southern womanhood tnoie may be to criticise on the part of the north southern womanhood io cultured is educated edu-cated southern woomanhood is roiiiiea southern womanhood is not narrow in its views and conceptions in life And no wo manhood in all the world subjected to too same influences surroundings with the same questions could or would do otherwise other-wise tnan tho southern woman is doing along the lines of the race question especially especi-ally As to the race question in the south there is as little friction as I find in the north The race question in tbe south is one between the Anglo Saxon and the African In tbe north it is between tho Parthians and Modes and Elamites and the dwellers from Messopotamia and Pontus and Asia and everywhere else and a good large importation from pandemonium In the south it is only the social phases in the north it is social financial commercial commer-cial industrious and so on and so on Social So-cial equality is sought for and believed in only by the lowest class of white people and the lowest class of negro Firstclass white people and firstclass negroes do not desire social equality As to the political phases of the race question we arc perfectly willing for the negro to vote and perfectly willingto allow a free ballot and a fair count upto the point where negro domination does not carry Wa have as free ballot and as fair count in tho south as we have in the north We have different methods of reaching the some end Down there wo use lead In Indiana we use silver We can kill them cheaper than we can buy them and the north can buy them cheaper than they can kill them and we are both running on the most economical lines Dudleys blocks of five they say brought 3 apiece With tho present financial finan-cial in the south that is more than they can afford to pay But candidly I know of no place in the south today especially espe-cially In Georgia where I live where the colored man cannot vote and his vote is as surely counted as any white maus vote polled in the state The colored people the south outside of politics and here and there an infringement infringe-ment the social borders upon got along as peaceably with their southern neighbors any two races under tho sun The negro is coming up in intelligence in financial condition and very much in his own self I respect But for the politicians of our country there would seldom be a jar between be-tween the white and the colored races Darwin expatiates on the descent of mane Tho southern mau when tfe comes to the race question leaves off the De |
