Show POLICE COUJiT All Unsuccessful Attempt at Swindling Swindl-ing Other Business Robert Bruer an individual who it is alleged beat his wife over the head with a whip on Main Street on Monday night and was arrested by Deputy Marshal Sprague was before Judge Pyper yesterday Mrs Bruer refused to appear against him but he was found guilty of drunkenness and reckless reck-less driving for which a fine of 15 was minosed 0 I Walsh was assessed a V for drunkenness Hans Madsen J Bogadape Thomas Hanahan and J G Gray all secondhand second-hand dealers were fined 3 each for violating vio-lating the ordinance requiring them to keep a record of their purchases In tne cases of the other secondhand dealers arrested for the same offense sentence was suspended W L Green of the Seventeenth Ward was fined ll0 for leaving the carcass car-cass of a horse lying in the street A very neat and clever attempt at swindling was nipped in the bud yesterday yes-terday by a mere accident Yesterday morning a well dressed young man entered en-tered the store of F Auerbach Bro and stated that Mr Oserndorier the tailor had sent him for some samples of silk linings They were furnished him and in a short time he returned I and presenting one of the samples said I that Mr Oberndorfer wanted twenty eight yards of the material and three pound > of silk thread Not suspecting that anything was wrong thegoods I which were valued at about 70 were furnished him and he departed Later in the day Mr Friedman one of Auer I bachs clerks chanced to meet Mr Oberndorfer on the street and asked him how he liked the silk The latter replied that he had purchased no silk and it was soon seen that a swindle had been cammitted The affair was reported re-ported to the police immediately and Officer Burt accompanied by Nelse lansohoff one of Auerbachs clerks started out in search of tae culprit and were fortunate enough to find him just as he was going down to the depot to take the train for Ogden After taking him to the station it was learned that he had also obtained three pounds of sewing silk worth 750 per pound from The Valker Co on the pretense that it was for Mr Oberndorfer He was arraigned before Judge Pyper yesterday afternoon and pleaded guilty to two complaints charging him with grand and petty larceny HP was bound over in the sum of Si 000 to await the action of the grand jury on the charge of grand larceny and fined 100 for the minor offense He stated to the court that his true name was Frank Hiloert although he had gone I under the name of Harry Waters Heave He-ave his age as 16 years and stated that he came from Rochester N Y and had only been in the city a short time Mr Oberndorfor asked him if he had any relatives whom he would like to have notified of this affair and he replied that he had a married sister in Cincinnati Cincin-nati but declined to give her name The goods obtained from Auerbachs were shipped by express to Ogden where he intended to get them but the silk belonging to the Walker Bros Co was found in his possession Hilbert is a very bright and intelligent intelli-gent looking young Hebrew and claims nat this is the first time he has ever I attempted to steal anything |
