Show MUZZLE DEPEW Chauncey M Depew is admitted to be one of the very ablest men in the Republican Re-publican party He is BO bright and clever that the wonder is that he is not a Democrat and devoting himself to the cause of the people But Mr Depew will have to be spiked as it were or there will be an ugly row in the party Indeed he has already severely stabbed Blaine in the matter ef trusts and stands up with Cleveland in their denunciation Here is what he says I dont care to enter into a criticism of Mr Blaine but I will say that I take General Harrisons view of the subject These trusts as some of them have developed lately are by no means for the public good and as they d I concern the whole people the peoples representatives in Congress and the r legislature should take them in hand Mr Depew has also been talking against the position of his party ia another direction On his recent return re-turn from England he said I met one nobleman a man of great intelligence who wanted to see Harrison President of the United States The reason he gave was that it the Democrats were successful they might put all raw materials ma-terials on the free list and then the American manufacturers could he thought manufacture goods more cheaply than Englishmen and undersell them in their own markets We suggest that from a Republican standpoint this is rank heresy It is worse being almost traitorous And yet that English nobleman had a clearer idea of the situation than American Republicans What he fears if Cleveland is elected will largely come to pass With free raw material this would soon be the great manufacturing centre of the world our superior facilities I facil-ities for manufacturing in the matter of machinery and capable workmen giving us an advantage over all competitors com-petitors If there were np tax on raw material American goods could be manufactured at such prices as would admit them to the markets of the world and as the Englishman feared many American made goods would compete successfully in England An increased demand for American goods would create an increased demand Lr American labor and that of course would increase the price of such labor As a Republican Mr Depew must be bottled or he will soon be leading his party into tho Democratic fold I l 1 > > rt |
