Show WITHIN THE DISTRICT I I I Further Expressions from the Property Owners I j i HE DIFFERENT VIEWS TAKEN J I I Object inns n to the Method by which the Tax is Levied Other ideas Advanced The sewerage question is still l the question aud there is probably no other so thoroughly and eagerly discussed at I the present time The article in THE SUNDAY HERALD was the starter and since then the interviews with leading I propertyowners whose interests will be affected by the proposed system I published daily in these columns have been widely read and commented uponWhile While I am not thoroughly in sympathy sym-pathy with the system proposed said one citizen approached yesterday and have some doubts as to whether I should vote to establish a sewerage tern at the present time I must say that THE HERALD has given us food for reflection ana facts and figures that enable us to discuss the matter intelligently intelli-gently something we could not do before be-fore Then we were all in the dark Now we have had a chance to become enlightened I am not an ardent advocate of the sewersJ another but whether the present system or some other be adopted whether the scheme pushed througn or whether it fail there is one thing clear to my mind this discussion must arouse even the slowest o a realization real-ization that it is aoolutely necessary some steps should be taken looking to the bettering of our pr sent sanitary condition which while we may not believe the numerous silly stories afloat we must all admit is nothing to brag on The discussion must result in a lasting benefit so long as the participants keep their temper and there appears to be I no reason why they should not OJ HERALD representatives were around I again yesterday Below will be found I the opinions in substance at least of the gentlemen approached GEORGE G BYWATERI believe that we should have sewerage but the question with me is what will we do with the sewage sew-age where will we be able to deposit it To run it Into the Jordan Is out of the question at least that is the way 110k at it The river is very low now in summer and a heavy frost would probably freeze the stream almost solid I do not euher like the idea ol the sewage being emptied into the lake I am not prepared to state either that I favor the mode cf assessment prop pro-p sed nnd I believe the a po rata assessment assess-ment of the entire city would work less hardship For the suburban Dortious of the city I think the dry earth plan is a good one and it might be employed togood effect probably even in the most populous part of JaitLake i have no money to spend for I experiments however and would like an assurance of success before committing myself to the propcsjd system I stand committed I com-mitted on sewerage the question with roes roe-s which Is the best manner to accomplish the desired end WALTER J BEATIEll think the proposed system is entirely toe large ana that it hould have been restricted to the two tiers of blocks on either side of Main Street running run-ning as far as Fourth South Tnis would have made it just about half its present size would have placed the expense ex-pense upou the shoulders of thOSe who can afford to bear It and afforded relief to those who need reief and need itbadly I shall certainly oppose being compelled toP to-P for sDmetning I do not need and which would not benefit me one particle GEOItGE BUNFORD Ves I live within he district known as No1 1 am a believer in sewerage and the only question with me is 113 to whether now is the right time in which to mal e a commencement That is however a probein we shall have to face sooner or later I am not prepared to say but that we arc as well prepared now as we may be later Tne nos accruing accru-ing to each propertyowner is of course a consideration but if sewerage will do away with many of the pestbreeders we are now surrounded with it will be cheap at almost any price I am not however in favor of sing the lake for a dumping ground I suppose the Council will discover some utis factory metho of geting rid of the offensive of-fensive matter JOHN ToirtDGE Well I had thought but little about the matter before Sunaay last i think now however that a s wer age sys em is needed and cannot fail to be Ii great benefit to the city I am in sewer district No 1 but shall vote yes J B WALDEN Mr Walden said the reporter you are quoted as owning irooerty in Sewer District Ko 1 How do you stand on the sewer question Am most decidedly in favor of it was the re spouse JACOB ALTI GEORGE E BOURSE If some means cane can-e or have been devised to assure success I think sewerage would be a good thing for he city It certainly would be a gieat convenience con-venience and a promoter of cleanliness That is saym a great deal I am however thoroughly opposed to the idea 01 running the sewage into the Jordan and thence as a natural consequence into the lake It maybe may-be as is asserted that the action of the salt water would act asa as-a pickler and thus destroy all odors I would however dislike very much to thinK as I silted my egg at breakfast that the salt was manufactured from the waters of a Lake into which was dumped the daily refuse of 30000 people now and probable 100000 within a few years D 0 CALDER ateWe havent bought much about the questicn said D G Calder jesterday 1 notice we are assessed sessed at 20COO while our neighbor who OWnS exactly the same number of feet front is away below You would however scarcely trade buildings would you Mr Calder thought not and said the neirs of the estate were undecided as to what steps they would take BUCKLE fcos A junior member of the firm Tas seen H s firm would certaimy not oppose the laying of a system of sewer age ageS C EWIXGI think it goes without sayIng say-Ing that sewerage is a necessity There ias been consideraole said about the Cullen esspool and tue odors arising therefrom This is all ruboisn as a visit irom am one will prove It is in gooa conditionc jn iderably better than we should be expected to keep it under the present sanitary arrangements angements of the city JOHN S BARSES I am in favor of sewerage sewer-age but do not approve of the proposed plan for there are many people who will have to mortgage their homes to pay for It The entire city is to be benefited by it and the improvement should be made by a pro rata tax upon all the people This is the only fair and equitable pan It seems tome to-me too that the district is too large it should be limited foten or twelve blocks In the business part of town for a sinner A R CARTER In the cast sewers are built by a pro rata tax and like Mr Baines I think It should be employed hera DAVID JAMESI am in favor of sewerage but am not fully convinced that the proposed pro-posed system can be successfully carried out if it can be however it will have my approval It LEWIS P KELSEY We have got to have sewerage It is a necessity aud of course I am in favor of It o Fox SYMONS Have not given the subject sub-ject great deal of attention but state that no protest will be heard from them HEKJIAN HILLEvery foot of ground I own is in for sewerage There is no use delaying action any longer I SPENCER CLAWSON am willing to pay my share or the expense for a proper sys o tern of sewerage I havent given the subject sub-ject a great deal attention so far and nave not formed any positive opinion m regard to the proposed system SAM LEVY I havent got much property but whitIvs got is in for sewerage It Is certainly badly needed and will be ot great benefit to the whole city A HARDTOf course I am In favor of sewerage JAMES JACK While t shall not be greatly affected by this system I am not satisfied tht it is practicable Where Is the water to come irom Shouldnt that question be first considered if the ystem is practicable practic-able howevor I am in favor ot it THE BURTON GARDNER Co 0 H Bardy speaking for this firm said that they should vote no on this proposition because they did not believe it could be successful until a supply of water was obtained DR GROESI am not opposed to sewerage sewer-age but tho system proposed Is altogether Impracticable and I shall fight it to the bitter bit-ter end I think the dry earth system should be employed It will answer perfectly for the next five years at least T C PATTEN am in favor of sewerage of some kind CHRISTIAN Rix Count me in among those favoring the proposition J H PARRY CoThis firm are opposed to the proposition they are of the opinion that the system will cost altogether too much for the amount of good to be derived from itST W N WILLIAMSI have not yet given the matter sufficient attention to be able to state just how shall vote upon it I ANDREW BRIXEN
