Show CONVINCING ORATORY The Democratic campaign speakers this yearare not as a rule indulging in flowery flights of eloquence and highflown oratory i bug they are going some mighty good plain talking of a kind which the people like and which they can understand and appreciate The Old Roman has not been oratorical orator-ical in any of his addresses but in al of them he has been logical has gOne r straight to the mark and has been con I vinolPg in a homely honest sort of way Ve have before us the printed copy of a speech delivered last week by Assistant PostmasterGenera Stevenson to his old constituents constit-uents at Shelbyvillo Indiana We take it that the effort was not Websterian or Ingersollian in the delivery de-livery but it is straightforward and unanswerable in the matter and must have had a convincing effect on the minds of at least all his intelligent hearers It was just such an address as would appeal to the conservative thoughtful men and win votes among the influential class of a community It would be better for both parties if they would employ speakers who would not resort to the hifalu tin FourthofJuly oratory but keep to argument and reason I A voter gained by convincing his I judgment may be tied to and he is ever after a careful and intelligent worker for the party Logical and augmentative all through General Stevenson deals with the issues of the campaign chiefly the tariff and avoiding avoid-ing claptrap and the tricks which popular speakers practice to gain applause ap-plause at the time makes it plain why the men of this country should support I the Democratic platform and ticket intead of the Republican After giving I a history of the various tariff laws of the Republic from the first in 1789 down to the present war tax and plainly pointing out the evils and hardships they have brought upon the people who have been i kept poor that the monopc lists might ba made enormously I rich General Stevenson pays his respects to the Republicans pet child the trust which is the direct result of the tariff A paragraph on this part of the subject will be read with interest What are these socalled trusts Simply Sim-ply combinations entered into between manufacture for the purpose of increasing the cost of an article to the consumer by limiting the supply How are they enabled to do this A high protective tariff cuts off competition from abroad and thus enables the home manufacturer to absolutely control themarket But for a high tariff these trusts combinations conspiracies against the people would be impossible These hateful monopolies are the legitimate offspring of a system legislation which under the name of protection enriches the few at the expense ex-pense of the many Let me give you an illustration The sugar trust has late i y advanced ad-vanced the price to tne consumer from one to two cents per pound One cent per pound upon the sugar consumed in the United States gives thirtyone million dollars additional ad-ditional profits to the monopoly trust This trust is made possible only by the high tariff on sugar The lumber trust by which every mans shingles and boards are arbitrarily arbi-trarily taxed is made possible only by the high tariff tax on lumber The salt trust by which the prico ol this necessity is taxed is made possible only by the high and tax on salt |
