The plaque, a surprise to the recipient, was presented to him by Bruce Adams, program moderator, as a token of esteem from teachers at Monticello Elementary Schoola. Through Dr. Maughans influence, creativity, and hard work the educational system of San Juan County and Monticello Elementary School has improved and prospered, said Adams. It is with a great deal of pleasure that we, the faculty of Monticello Elementary, present this token of our appreciation to Dr. Maughan. Bom, reared and educated in Cache County, Utah, Maughan moved to Monticello in 1951 after earning a bachelors degree and a masters degree at Utah State University. His first two degrees were in entomology and he distinguished himself in this field by discovering a new parasite. The discovery proved accepted the principalship at Monticello High, and in 1958 was appointed assistant superintendent of the San Juan School District. In this capacity, he traveled the district visiting schools and was able to determine the educational needs of the district and make significant changes. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on education in San Juan County, calling it From Rags to Riches. In 1967, he was awarded his doctorate of education and became superintendent of San Juan County schools, a position he held for 1 1 years.
