Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 6, 1988 - Page 16 Every year around this time, I go about sulking because the world is unfair. Supposedly if you talk to flowers and plants they will thrive and exuberantly produce, each according to his kind. Why, then, are my trees the last in town to throw out small green banners proclaiming Spring? I go walking under those trees looking up at the swollen twig tips. Good tree, I say. I pat the trunk. Youre so smart and wonderful and any day now youre going to make beautiful, beautiful green leaves. Today I drove to the post office and saw that every tree in town except mine is flaunting brave new green. My trees sit there with little tassels on their tops. Im so annoyed that I may take Rudy Cooks advise. Last year he said, Doris, take those trees off welfare! Stop watering them all the time and make them get water from the river. I was horrified. The poor things. Make them go all that way to get a drink? I cant do that. But if they dont produce some leaves pretty soon, I just may. Avoid filing errors Tax returns are rolling in and the Internal Revenue Service has identified some common problems to avoid when preparing your tax return. So far this year over two million returns have been received at the Ogden Service Center. Some problems have surfaced this year because of the changes in the new tax forms, which were brought about by the Tax Reform Act of 1986. The biggest problem is duplicate exemptions. This occurs when taxpayers check the boxes under Exemptions on line 5a Form 1040A (line 6a On Form 1040) and then list I am also looking for the complaint department to register another protest about the weather. Yesterday at noon I drove to Sand Island and waved goodbye to 24 people clad in bathing suits and shorts, all happily climbing aboard rafts to start down the San Juan en route to Paiute Farms, all exclaiming, What a beautiful day! By the time I had returned to Mexican Hat, the sky was dark and a cold wind was howling down the highway and I expect also the river. And it hasnt stopped to catch a breath since. This is a professional group, Outward Bound, home office in Denver, river running out of Vernal, Utah. Im sure they know what they are doing but this is their first official San Juan run. Outward Bound bought the late Bill Belknaps outfit and the transfer was not complete last year in time for trips. The party putting on yesterday included several quite small children plus one six month old cherub. They were supposed to come up for additional provisions when they passed Mexican Hat today but its almost dark and I havent seen them yet. I have driven down to the boat landing twice and once to a high spot out on the oil field, looking hopefully upriver. But the water simply flows on its way, devoid of signs of human life. Fortunately, John and Loie Evans are on this trip and they do know our river. Loie is Belknaps daughter and has made the San Juan run many times. The recently-upgrade- d boat downis road like ramp just town, at least by Mex Hat standards. It was straightened out in places, graveled, and sanded. River runners will no John Fogg may help you save. Another item to review carefully is the standard deduction. Several taxpayers, who do not itemize deductions, are forgetting to take their correct standard deduction. Last year it was built into the tax tables and was not a separate line item. The IRS asks taxpayers to pay special attention to this area. The final problem that delays processing and refunds the most is math errors. The IRS suggests you check and recheck addition, subtraction and multiplication to insure your return is filed error-fre- e. completed two wells and are shooting the third today. When I heard the oil men talk about shooting a well, I used to have some vague mental picture of a couple of the guys fining up and firing their guns at a dry hole, saying Take that, you "! One day someone explained that they shoot a well by putting dynamite down it, with sand on top of the explosive, and then I guess they activate the dynamite, a sort of a kick in the posterior portion of a well. All right. Baby, get moving and make some oil ... The pumps are in on the two completed wells. They came in making a couple of barrels a day, Skeen said. Goodrich zone, 200 feet total depth. The new face out on the oil field is that of John Sanders, from San Antonio, Texas. Sanders plans to drill on acreage acquired from Wesgro Oil Corp. Around my place, were still getting ready for the tourists, unpacking and pricing and arranging and rearranging until my young associates, Ned and Norris Cly, Katherine Rock, and Taylor Black, have started hiding under the counters when I walk into the store. Fortunately they are too courteous to cry, as my son Paul was apt to do, Mother! I cant move as fast as you can talk!
