If you feel your child is using drugs, then overcome your hesitation to violate their rights. I recently arrested a young man for trafficking in marijuana. It came as a complete surprise to his parents. But when we searched his room incident to the arrest, we found a virtual den of drugs and The parents were shocked and embarassed I asked the mother if she had been in the room lately, and she indicated that three years ago her son had told her never to enter his room and she hadnt. If you think your children are using drugs the best thing you can do is confront them with the facts. Dont ignore the symptoms or the problem. State firmly that you will not tolerate drug use. Dont overreact and dont feel guilty. I have found, based on my police experience, that making young people feel guilty by telling them how ashamed you are of them, or bribing them by offering rewards if they quit drugs, is not effective. You must be willing to make a firm commitment of your time, and financial resources. You must supervise you childrens activities in every phase of their lives school, home, and social life. By exerting discipline and parental perogatives, you are showing the child that your love is unconditional. She came to me and asked for a private conversation. and then broke down and cried for several minutes in my office. Her son was dealing drugs, and she didnt know what to do. I began asking her questions, and she related that up until a year ago, her son had been a good boy. He was happy in school, an avid church goer, and he was good at setting goals. A joy around the house. Suddenly he changed. She said it seemed to happen overnight. He became belligerent and defensive about late night hours. School and church became low priorities on his agenda. She was uncomfortable with his new friends. She was concerned, but didnt know what to do. One day when she was making his bed, she found a plastic bag of marijuana under his mattress. She made the decision not to force the issue. In her words, she thought it was a passing phase. His behavior became worse. He dropped out of school. His hair became - long, and he curtains.
