Show FARM BUREAU PAYS LIBEL Receipt of a check of $27,S00 from the Utah Farm Bureau was announced today by National Farmers Union. It was in settlement settle-ment of the $25,000 verdict for libel, plus interest, which the Farmers Union was awarded last year by a federal jury in Salt Lake City. The original $25,000 damage award was made by the jury in May, 1951. The Farm Bureau appealed to the U. S. Circuit Coturt of Appeals, which sustained the verdict in June, 1952. Payment of the verdict and interest in-terest ends the two year litigation which started during the last election elec-tion campaign in October, 1950 when the state Farm Bureau referred re-ferred to the Farmers Union as "Communist dominated" in a political polit-ical memorandum. The) charge was made that Congressman Walter Granger, then a candidate for reelection re-election to the U. S. House of Representatives Rep-resentatives (now Democratic candidate can-didate for the Senate), sometimes cooperated with the "Communist dominated Farmers Union." |
