Show 70SCA' T9 BE fihsi ePEia THIS SEASOil Directed by Carlos Alexander, a Sugar House resident by choice rather than nativity, the Utah Opera Theater will open its third season Thurdsay and Saturday, October 16 and 18 in Kingsbury Hall with the performance of "Tosca." by Puccini. The 35-piece orchestra of members mem-bers o the Utah Symphony will be conducted on Thursday by Alexendar Alex-endar and by Carl Fuerstner. ' A 35 piece orchestra of members of the Utah Symphony will play Puccini's music, conducted on Thursday by Alexendar and on Saturday Sat-urday by Carl Fuerstner, associate conductor of the opera group and resident pianist at BYU. A well-known musical figure in the East, Alexendar came to Utah several years ago to direct BYU summer opera, was impressed with the abundance ot opera uu-ent uu-ent in the intermountain area, and decided to organize an opera theater the-ater and workshop in Salt Lake. The Utah Opera Workshop was started in December, 1950 and by June of this year Alexendar had conducted and staged no less than 14 full scale operas, most of them sung in English. In addition to 'Tosca," the Opera Theater season will include the Metropolitan Opera version of "Fledermaus;" a December production produc-tion of 'Marriage of Figaro," sung in English; the new Metropolitan .English version of "La Boheme jn March. In April local opera lovers may witness the first Salt Lake performance per-formance of "Amahl and the Night Vistors," and also "The Medium. The, spring production, set for May has not yet been announced. Both season and single performance perform-ance tickets, reserved and general admission ducats are now available at the theater office, 229 Constitution Constitu-tion building. |
