Show Sugar House Merc. Sells Out After 40 Years of Service The Sugar House Mercantile company, known to thousands throughout the southeast for the past forty years as 'the "Merc," one of the oldest and most reputable rep-utable firms in the area, changed hands a few days ago when John M. Matsen sold out his interests to the Sheffields. Mr. Matsen's father, J. Martin Matsen, founded the firm in 1905 and it was located at first on the southwest corner of the main intersection where Pehr- son Hardware now stands. Twice the firm moved to new locations a little further south on Eleventh East, before locating locat-ing at its present address on Eighth East and 21st So. The Sugar House Merc during Its 40 years of business was the typical old cime all-purpose store, supplying hundreds of families with just about all the necessities of life meats, groceries, gro-ceries, clothing and household goods and at the same time keeping abreast of the times with latest equipment and facilities. fa-cilities. Mr. Matsen died in June of 1943 and Mrs. Matsen died last April. They had made their home at 1990 McClelland since 1912. John Matsen grew right up in the business working with his father from the time he was a youngster and carrying on the business alone for the past few years. The Sheffields, James F. and his sons Byron and Carl N., have operated Sheffield's Cash Store at 2196 S. 7th E. since the spring of 1928, building it into one of the finest food stores in this section. They will operate thr Sugar House Merc property under un-der the name of Sheffield's Super Su-per Market, under the management manage-ment of Mr. Sheffield's son-in-law, B. Wayne Sewell. A program pro-gram of extensive remodeling and improvement while the store remains in operation will precede their formal opening shortly after January 1. |
