Show Mine. Schiaparelli Advises Women 9 Shun hats and shoes that accentuate your height, if you are tall. "Black is a color that is almost impossible for a woman to make a mistake in wearing," states the famed couturiere. "If I should be reduced to such a position po-sition that I could afford only one or two garments, I should buy a simple black suit and a very simple black dress. Always, Al-ways, with a black suit or dress, you can wear dressy, tailored, or sports . hats, completely changing your appearance with each change. You can change belts, scarves, and accessories, even shoes. With the suit you can wear a tailored blouse or a frilly, dressy one. "Black also has the advantage, for large or stout persons, that it detracts from one's size and tends to give an illusion of slim-ness." A woman should dress to please herself because, in so doing, do-ing, she unconsciously is dressing dress-ing to please men. So says Elsa Schiaparelli, the noted French designer, who declares de-clares in the March American Magazine that "American women wom-en could be the best-dressed women in the world if only they know how to get the most for their money but they don't." , She believes the American man is "altogether too generous" in spending "for his wife's and daughters' clothing and is seldom sel-dom pleased with the way they dress." American men like simplicity in dress, says Mme. Schiaparelli, and here's the code she offers for women to achieve that desired de-sired smartness in attire: 1 Don't wear black if you have a sallow complexion or if you are elderly. 2 Don't be afraid to wear your clothes a long time, but do buy good ones. 3 Don't be fancy in dress during the day. 4 Never go out without a hat because it will kill an otherwise smart outfit. 5 Never wear "flats" with a dress unless 'it is a very simple sim-ple sports number. 6 Don't buy clothes just because they look good on someone else. 7 Don't wear bulky coats, burly suits, large hats, etc., if you are tiny. 8 Avoid excessive decoration decora-tion and wear inconspicuous clothes if you are stout. |
