Long live the queen1" These courageous, defiant words were the last spoken to the world by the official Dutch broadcasting station at Bandoeng, the city which was made headquarters for the Allied command in the Netherlands East Indies, In-dies, after Batavia was lost. At the time they were spoken, the Japanese troops were in the suburbs, and it was clear that Java was in the hands of the Japs. ; x BITTER PILL COMING j One of the main arguments against the sales tax is that it is "politically dangerous." Even so, Congress may yet discover that necessity will dictate the adoption of some sort of sales tax, political expediency notwithstanding. not-withstanding. "Politics as usual" may finally be forced by war necessity to take a back seat. We are reaching a point where it will be impossible to substantially increase revenue re-venue from taxes on businesses and individual individ-ual incomes, without endangering the very existence of the economic and social struc ture we are fighting to defend in every corner cor-ner of the world. When that point is readied, a sales tax, which will be paid by all, is the only solution, bitter as it may be for vote-hungry vote-hungry politicians to take. |
