Show Ancient Alaska Town Is Fast-Growing Community KODIAK, ALASKA. This 147-year-old town, believed the oldest on the Pacific coast north of Eureka, Calif., calls itself the fastest-growing community on the coast. The big navy base under construction explains ex-plains the growth. But Mayor R. H. Cadwick insists it is not one of those wide-open, hell-roaring hell-roaring Alaska camps Rex Beach wrote about in the old days. "Of course, with a population of hundreds of construction men and fishermen, we can't be a Sunday school town," he said. "We have to let the men have their fling, but we insist on law and order and get it." |
