Show WHAT IS THE ANSWER? What may prove one of the worst defense de-fense "bottlenecks" is the 35-houv week for coal miners. Coal is the very lifeblood of industrial operations. Yet the miners still work only the 35-hour week which was established during the depression when demand for coal was low and it was necessary to give work to as many men as possible. 0 In a nation which has pledged itself to great sacrifices for the cause of democracy, is it unreasonable to ask coal miners to work 40 or 42 hours a week? Is it unfair to ask that labor, as well as capital, moderately increase in-crease its efforts in the interest of national defense? The success of the defense drive drive may rest upon the answers to those questions. |
