Show Jalopy Goes 4,000 Miles On Crankcase Drainings OLEAN, N. Y. Young James Thomas chugged around his home town today in his 1928 model oil-burning oil-burning roadster and told how he had traveled 4,000 miles using crank-case crank-case drainings as fuel. Thomas' old Ford gets 18 miles to the gallon on drainings. and easily attains a speed of 40 miles an hour, he said. During most of his cross-country trip, Thomas added, he obtained his fuel free at filling stations. He explained he hit upon his oil-burner oil-burner system when while on his way from California to Texas he ran short of gasoline and stopped at a desert station. "The establishment turned out to be a refueling base for a long-distance trucking company which ran its outfits on Diesel fuel," he related. Yet Thomas tried the oil, adjusted his carburetor and ignition and "the old crock ran like an airplane." Because Be-cause the oil was too expensive he switched later to drainings, made further adjustments "to step up the engine's compression," and has been running on the free fuel ever since. Across the car's windshield is a sticker, "I don't waste gas." |
