Show NecU-And-Neclt Races Feature Tuesday's Primary (Elections Baum, Madsen, Case, Workman Win Close Ones; Bennett, Jones Breeze Through County And State The closeness of many county races characterized Tuesday's primary elections, with several nominations riding on the strength of just a few ballots. Dave W. Baum, Duchesne, won the closest contest of the day, a 9-vote margin over rival Carl J. Hacking, Roosevelt, for the Republican nomination for sheriff. The final count was 177 votes for Baum and iQ8 for Hacking. J. P. Madsen, Duchesne, won the Democratic nomination for state representative by running ahead of Daniel F. Mitchell, Neola, Ne-ola, by 20 votes, 457-437, Floyd Case, Mt. Emmons, received the Democratic nod for four-year county commissioner by de-cisioning de-cisioning Elden Brady, Bridge-land, Bridge-land, 465-443; and German B. Workman, Roosevelt, won a 466-422 contest from Edwin Carman, Car-man, Duchesne, to receive the Democratic nomination for assessor. as-sessor. Some contests, however, resulted re-sulted in landslides. Incumbent Sheriff Arzy Mitchell soundly defeated his opponent, Sherman Sher-man Anderson, Roosevelt, for the Democratic nomination, 681-260; 681-260; Jesse R. Allen, Myton, eased by Charley Bertola, Myton, My-ton, for the Republican nomination nomi-nation for two-year commissioner, commission-er, 258-80; Ray Brown, Mont-wel, Mont-wel, defeated William H. Cro-zier, Cro-zier, Roosevelt, 618-234, for the Democratic nomination for two-year two-year commissioner; Helen D. Odekirk, Duchesne, decisioned Thelma H. Roberts, Roosevelt, for the Democratic nomination for recorder, 502-379; and Dallas F. Young, Roosevelt, had little difficulty winning the Democratic Democra-tic nomination for county attorney at-torney over James R. Hall, also of Roosevelt, 519-353. In federal and state offices, Wallace F. Bennett, following a state-wide trend, ran ahead of Rue L. Clegg, 225-115, for the GOP nomination as U. S. Senator; Sen-ator; Preston L. Jones, who defeated de-feated Howard Call for the GOP nomination a s representative from the first district, also ran ahead of his opponent in Duchesne Du-chesne county, 200-121; and Joseph Jo-seph E. Nelson defeated David T. Lewis, 210-105, for the Republication Re-publication nomination to the Supreme court, while J. Allan Crockett won the Democratic nomination as Supreme court justice, landsliding Albert H. Ellett, 548-229. Nelson and Crockett also won throughout the state. As final results indicate, county Democrats outvoted their Republican opponents in the primary. Sheriff Mitchell, of the Democrats, received the most votes for his party with 681; Mr. Allen received more votes than any other Republican candidate, 258. 111 Tuesday's elimination contests closed the field for the Nov. 5 general election. On the ballot will be J. P. Madsen and Incumbent In-cumbent William Brotherson. Boneta, Democratic and GOP candidates, respectively, for state representative; Dallas F. Loung, Democrat, and R. Earl Dillman, incumbent, Roosevelt. Republican, county attorney; German B. Workman, Democrat, Demo-crat, and Byron Collett, incumbent, incum-bent, Duchesne, Republican, county assessor; Arzy Mitchell, Democratic incumbent, and Dave Baum, Republican, county sheriff; Ray Brown, Democrat, and Jesse R. Allen, Republican, two-year commissioner; Floyd Case, Democrat, and George Brandon, Mt. Home, Republican, four-year commissioner; Florence Flor-ence Poulson, incumbent, Duchesne, Du-chesne, Democrat, and Laura Clemons, Duchesne Republican, treasurer; Joseph H. Harrison, Democrat, and John Baumgaer-tel, Baumgaer-tel, incumbent Republican, Roosevelt Roos-evelt precinct justice of the peace. County Clerk Porter L. Merrell, Democrat, and Helen Odekirk, Democratic nominee for recorder, are unopposed. In addition, Republican Wallace Wal-lace F. Bennett will face Democratic Demo-cratic Senator Elbert D. Thomas; Thom-as; Republican Preston L. Jones will face First District Representative Repre-sentative Walter K. Granger; and Judge Joseph E. Nelson will face Judge J. Allan Crockett for the position falling vacant on the state Supreme court.
