Show I Support For The County Fair The Duchesne County Fair Friday and Saturday will bring a grand climax to this summer's activities. The last few months have seen rodeos, livestock shows, the revival of the Uintah Basin Industrial convention, and Vernal's Dam Day, last Saturday. Satur-day. Coming last, the county fair suffers a great handicap in that people this time of year begin to get tired of celebrations, as evidenced by the lack of success of some of the more recent rodeos. ro-deos. Eventually you and I start getting a trifle indifferent toward what we consider "too many affairs." It is to be hoped, however, that everyone will bear with the monotony of "affairs" a little longer, as the county fair is important. im-portant. The county fair, all over the nation, is a familiar institution. I It is recognized everywhere as a primary agricultural celebration, celebra-tion, where farmers get together to compete their crops and livestock live-stock with each other and to compare notes. Farm wives always al-ways enter household, crocheting, crochet-ing, and flower exhibits, etc., and join with the children in 4-H club work and entertainment. entertain-ment. General merrymaking is inevitably a featured part of the county fair structure. Troubles are temporarily forgotten, and all turn out for a good time. This, of course, is an ideal picture of the "perfect" county fair. Unfortunately lack of interest in-terest often results in the fair falling considerably short of the ideal. Such was the fate of the Duchesne Du-chesne County Fair last year. Although there were many worthwhile exhibits and activities ac-tivities to be enjoyed at last year's fair, the turnout, according accord-ing to County Agent Louis Jensen, Jen-sen, was disappointing. Thus all who had worked hard to make the fair a grand success, from members of the fair board down to the individual exhibitor, found their efforts pretty much in vain. Popular indifference proved a little too much for even ev-en the most earnest endeavor. The recent U.B.I.C. proves conclusively how successful a regionally-sponsored activity can be. The same kind of public spirit will make an equal success suc-cess of the 1950 Duchesne County Coun-ty Fair and eliminate all possibility pos-sibility of a repeat performance of 1949. GWH |
