Pappas Viim TU Combination On Cookie Hesipe Mrs. Nick Pappas, of Gusher, still can't believe it's true that she won a lovely Westinghouse walnut TV radio and phonograph phono-graph combination when she was pronounced one of the winners win-ners in a Pillsbury recipe eon-i eon-i test. She sent three cookie re-ripes re-ripes in September and won in the November contest, receiving her combination just before Christmas. This week we have the privilege priv-ilege of printing the winning reripe for Curly Twirly Cookies as well as Mrs. Pappas' Snow Ball cookie recipe. CURLY TWIRLY COOKIES (Approximately 2 or ZVz doz.) 4V2 cups cake flour 23 cup Crisco 3 eggs Vi cup orange juice 1 cup rich ilk Vi tsp. salt Pinch of baking powder Syrup, made with 2 cups sugar and 1 cup water Walnuts and cinnamon Mix flour, salt, baking powder. pow-der. Cut in Crisco. Beat eggs, orange juice, milk. Add to flour mixture, and knead to soft but not sticky dough. Roll out very thin and cut in strips about 1 inch wide and twelve inches long. Each strip makes -a cookie. Put a small kettle on stove and put in about 4 or 5 inches of Wesson or Mazola oil. When oil is hot put one of the cookie strips in a small tea strainer, hold it in hot grease until it puffs up and forms a shape, then let it drop out of the strainer into the oil. Cook a few more minutes, turning over and over. Take out and lay on a piece of paper. Cook cookies one at a time. After they are cooked, dip them in the syrup which has been cooked to table syrup stage and cooled. Turn cookie two or three times. Remove from syrup and sprinkle with a little sugar, cinnamon and crushed nuts. (Very good). SNOW BALLS 1 lb. butter, softened 1 cup powdered sugar 2 egg yolks vanilla, according to taste flour 2 cups walnuts, ground Place softened butter in large bowl and add powdered sugar. Mix with mixer or with hands until creamy. Add egg- yolks and vanilla. Cream well, then add cake flour, a little at a time until a soft, but not sticky, dough is formed. Take small amount of dough and in center place Vi tsp. ground nuts. Roll each cookies in desired shape. Place on cookie sheet and bake at. 350 degrees from 30 to 35 minutes. When cool, roll in powdered sugar. Cookies will not brown much. |
