Show Ute Tribal Plan Of Improvement To Go To Congress A bill to liberalize use of Ute tribal funds and six other bills to remove tribes . from . bureau control in eight . states were introduced in-troduced by Sen. Arthur V. Wat-kins Wat-kins (R., Utah) Monday. The amendment to the 1951 bill which authorized the payment pay-ment of more than 17 million dollars to the Ute Indians will enable the tribe to receive per capita payments from interest on the funds. The bill was originally limited to prevent spending of more than one-third of the principal and it was interpreter! in-terpreter! as also affecting income in-come from interest. A similar bill is expected to be introduced in the House. Watkins, chairman of the Indian In-dian affairs subcommittee, also submitted bills to free Indians of the West Oregon agency and the Klamath tribe of Oregon, Indians of four tribes in Kansas and Nebraska and all Indianss in Texas and Florida. A bill to liberate the Turtle Mountain tribe of North and South Dakota Da-kota and Montana was also presented. pre-sented. The bills were introduced in compliance with the Eisenhower Eisenhow-er administration's announced purpose of removing all competent com-petent tribes from government supervision. |
