Show Pulse Of The Public Editor, Standard: Twelve members represented the Uintah Basin Farmers Union Un-ion at the National Farmers Union convention held March 5-8 at Denver. Many things of importance to family type farmers (people of the soil) were discussed. For instance, better schools for rural people, better health facilities, and a farm program for the family type farmer a program that will give farmers something some-thing to look forward to by staying on the farm security for the farmer instead of potential poten-tial bankruptcy. Farmers Union stands with the Brannon Plan, because it feels it is a program headed in the right direction to help keep farmers on the land. Considerable attention has been brought to light by the National Tax Equality Association: Associa-tion: that we should tax the untaxed, un-taxed, and do away with the wartime excise tax. Let's take a glance at each and see how they affect us here in the Basin. First, take the "Untaxed," cooperatives. If you will check Into the records of the local gas and oil cooperative in Roosevelt, Roos-evelt, you will find that they have filed both a federal and state income tax report, and paid taxes on all that should be taxed. They have paid all sales taxes required by any business and also the excise tax. You will find that they pay all taxes tax-es other businesses in town are required to pay. Let's look at the excise tax. In one of the letters sent to most business houses in Roosevelt, Roos-evelt, this is one objection they mention: "We particularly urge that you show this to the women wo-men folks as it affects them tremendously on such things as cosmetics, furs, jewelry, luggage lug-gage and transportation." How much Is this excise tax going to affect the big majority of us here in the Uintah Basin? E. Floyd Ross Farmers Union Fieldman Dear Editor: While looking through some of my old letters, I ran across one from you asking for information infor-mation from me once in awhile, I'm a little slow in letting you know this, but we returned from Guam Dec. 11, and tied up at the repair base, pier 2, San Diego.
