Show 'Bringing 'Em Back Alive' The U. S. Congress :s now embroiled in its latest witch hunt, this time by that one-man big-game hunter, the honorable Senator Joseph McCarthy. In his blasts before the Senate Sen-ate investigating group, McCarthy McCar-thy has charged the state department, de-partment, from Secretary Ache-son Ache-son on down, with being a haven ha-ven for Communists. So far the senator has failed to produce pro-duce any type of evidence to substantiate his claims. Perhaps the senator has his own' definition of a Communist, and anyone who doesn't meet it is as guilty as Stalin. Possibly the senator's definition includes anyone in this country who is not his type 'of rock-ribbed conservative con-servative or could it be the senator is making political hay under that boiling African sun? Regardless of the outcome of the McCarthy political show, the state department has suffered suf-fered a blackeye, through loss of face in the cold war, and loss of faith on the part of the general gen-eral public (many men in the street don't mind believing McCarthy's Mc-Carthy's charges). Ypu can bet the Kremlin and comrade propagandists are getting get-ting an earful of all the Washington Wash-ington fireworks, That's one thing the Soviet foreign office doesn't have to worry about continued loyalty checkups of its officials. In Russia the government gov-ernment is supreme, and government gov-ernment policy must always go unquestioned. In the United States the legislative leg-islative branch (Congress) has a right at times to intervene in the affairs of the executive branch (the administration); but this right shouldn't be abused to the extent of unnecessarily embarrassing em-barrassing the state department throughout the world. The trouble is that too many people, nowadays, are spotting a Communist behind every bush Of course, there are dangerous Reds in this country that .could bear a lot of investigation, but our fundamental freedoms as Americans are endangered when one tries to draw a sharp line of demarcation between Communists Com-munists and non - Communists. The line is being drawn, with the result that many of us could be called into court tomorrow as "dangerous Communists." Before members of Congress and the man in the street start hollering about Communists in our midst, they might gather their proof before crying "wolf." GWH |
