Show Truman Signs Ute Land Sales Dill President Harry S. Truman signed the Watkins - sponsored legislation last Thursday to permit per-mit the sale of certain Ute tribal tri-bal lands at Duchesne, Rand-lett, Rand-lett, and Myton. Affected are tracts of land within the original boundaries of the Uintah-Ouray reservation, opened to public purchase at $1.25 an acre 34 years ago, with the passage of the Act of July 16, 1916. According to terms of the act, the land reverted re-verted back to the Office of Indian Affairs, if not purchased within a stipulated period. For several years Myton and Duchesne have sought clarification clarifi-cation of title to disputed lands in their immediate vicinity. Myton, My-ton, in particular, granted funds for an airport if the city would provide a site, can now go ahead with plans, provided purchase pur-chase of needed land can now be effected. At Duchesne, lack of certainty certain-ty concerning land within and adjacent to the city limits has held up plans for city expansion and improvement. |
