Show ;! News From St. Helen's Catholic Church il - By - Father Pellegrino Sunday, Dec. 2, will be the First Sunday1 of Advent. It represents the 4000 years of waiting for the Messias. In the church year it comprises only four weeks. From the stem of Jesse, according to the prophesy of Isaias, there came forth a most fair flower, Jesus Christ. The Liturgy of the Synagogue Syna-gogue and of the Christian faith are similar, and even the Imperial Romans confused the two. The Roman Advent (Coming) has always al-ways borne a happy and joyful character. Now with the Violet Vestments, it takes on a Pene-tential Pene-tential note. It is a season of preparation for the birth of the Son of God. The Scripture texts used in all of the' Masses are from the Old Testament. The life of Blessed John Grande will be portrayed Sunday at 1:30 on the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) Hour over KVEL. Last week the life of Saint Paul of Crete was heard It depicted the 7th century with its IconacLast Heresy. The Iconaclasts were the breakers of all sacred images, pictures, Mosaics Mos-aics and statues. On Monday at 4,00 p.m. all of the children of the parish ars asked to come to play practice at the convent. Tuesday evening the CYO met and discussed plans for a communion breakfast on Dec. 8, the feast of the Immaculate conception con-ception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The basketball team for Notre Dame High School in Price will be here for three days with their coach, Jack Kobe. All of these young men will attend Holy Mass, receive Holy Communion in a group, and be treated to breakfast afterwards. Wednesday evening saw the men and women of the parish at a card party at the rectory. A delicious dessert was served by the Altar I Society. The proceeds from the card party will be used for new drapes for the Rectory. Sunday Masses continue at 8:00 and 10:00 during the Advent season, sea-son, and confessions are heard at 5:00 until 6:00 p.m on Saturday and before Masses on Sunday. Saturday is the first Saturday of the month in December and is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. December 2 is the feast of Saint Vibiana, the Saint after whom the Cathedral in Los Angeles is named. December 3 is the day dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, Apostle of the Indies. He convert" ed 100,000 pagans to Christianity in Japan, China and the nearby islands. December 5 is the feast day of St. Barbara, who was a native of Egypt. He was the Archbishop Arch-bishop of Myra in Asia Minor and the lover and patron of children in his Diocese. He died in the middle of the 4th century. He is remembered for the money which he .threw in a window that three young girls might have a dowry for their marriage. Because of this gift he is associated with giving, and children thank St. Nicholas at Christmas time for their gifts. |
