Show -JX- CLIFF MEMMOTT, Editor IMPROVED CITY PARK INVITING TO U.B.I.C. VISITORS AND GUESTS .... I don't know how many residents of Roosevelt have taken time to inspect the City Park the past few weeks But those who have most .certainly have observed a great ) amount of improvement over past summers. ' Among the noticable improvements are the lighted tennis courts, new location for the playground equipment, V dressing rooms at the rear of the speaker's stand, hard surfacing area in front of stand, and several additional rows of bleachers to accommodate UBIC visitors. A visit to the community rose garden will find a beau- tiful array of roses that lend a grand atmosphere to the I park, as does the well kept sod that stretches north, east Id, and west of the rose garden. A word of praise is due' the mayor and city council who have approved the jobs that have been done and have encouraged cooperation with various groups who have added to the improvement of the City Park. There is always a discordant note in just about every community project. . . And the park is no different, be- !1 cause there are still youngsters (we all hope they're youngsters), young-sters), who insist on destroying and mutilating property. . . More complaints have come to us that tennis nets are being f damaged, along with various other pieces of equipment, 3 placed in the park for the use of the public. """ Can't someone do something to discourage wanton, des " traction and waste of public property? . . . Maybe each parent should take a few minutes and talk these problems over with his own children it might help ... At least it's worth the effort. v E v WELCOME TO U.B.I.C. IS REPEATED .... ' Last week this column, as well as the entire paper, carried a formal invitation to the public outside of Roosevelt Roose-velt to join in the 1953 Uintah Basin Industrial Convention that opened Wednesday and will continue through Thursday and Friday of this week. The committee, headed by Merlin Sullivan, and Mayor J. V. McLea are reiterating their enthusiastic invitation to come to Roosevelt on Aug. 5, 6 and 7 to join in the annual U.B.I.C. which, it is predicted, will surpass other years' programs of education, entertainment and culture. v E v I SATURDAY IS TOP DAY FOR HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS .... Afraid to start a trip on Friday the 13th? Actually, says the National Safety Council, fewer people peo-ple are killed or injured in traffic accidents on Friday the 13th than on Saturday the 14th for the simple reason that there is more traffic on Saturday than on Friday. "Accident Facts," the Council's statistical yearbook, which is just off the press, shows that 21 per cent of the 32,500 fatal motor vehicle accidents last year occurred on j Saturdays. i Sunday was second highest, with 19 per cent of the j fatal accidents. Then came Friday with 14 per cent. Monday and Wednesday each had 12 per cent of the fatal accidents, I and Tuesday and Thursday 11 per cent. I Saturday also led the list last year for all motor ve-! ve-! hide accidents, including those causing property damage as well as injury, with 19 per cent occurring on that day. Sunday was next with 16 per cent. ; v E v "A lot of youngsters have been raised in the past twenty years with the idea that government support is a normal thing for farmers to expect at all times. That kind of thinking can lead to Socialism. We've got to' get back depending on ourselves in normal times." Ezra Taft Benson , I 30 |
