Show Utahns Paid Tax Of 72.48 Per Capita Last year Taxes paid by Utah residents to the state treasury in the fiscal fis-cal year ended last June amounted amount-ed to $72.48 per capita. For the nation as a whole the corresponding corres-ponding per capita average was $59.59. The average American's personal per-sonal income was $1,434 in the calendar year 1950. The average Utah resident took in only $1,271). The average American, therefore, there-fore, spent about $4.16 out of every $100 he received, for taxes tax-es which reached the state treasury; treas-ury; the average Utahn $5.70 per $100. In making comparisons between be-tween states, it is found that, according to the census bureau, 30 states had higher incomes per capita than did Utah in 1950; but only 11 states paid more taxes per capita for the support of state government than did Utah; and only ten paid a higher percentage of their income in taxes to state government than did Utah. The ten included Arizona, Ari-zona, New Mexico' and Wash-ingtpn, Wash-ingtpn, among the 11 Mountain and - Pacific Coast states; and Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and the two Caro-linas Caro-linas six southern states and Oklahoma. "Nor is the picture any brighter bright-er for Utah from the taxpayer viewpoint," commented Patrick Healy, Jr., chairman of the Utah State Tax Commission, "when it is noted that the Census Bureau classes revenue from liquor licenses li-censes as taxes, but revenue from state monopolies which sell direct to the consumer is classed as revenue from public enterprises rather than from taxes." |
