utah offer a perplexing problem as to the rations that produce the largest and most economical gains in the fattening of lambs for macket the recently reached cooperative a agreement g rement of tile the utah experiment station s t teon with the lamb feeders of monroe presents an v to conduct fundamental and original research in the finishing of native range lambs for the commercial market the iamb feeders of utah wish to secure information relative to the feeding value of the various cuttings of alfalfa hay bay brown hay of the homo home grown grains as compared with corn and the use of molasses in the presence of large annual yields of alfalfa hay rather large amounts of barley information should be given upon these feeds as the backbone of fattening rations for lambs cambs in utah twelve groups of native utah lambs each will be fed for approximately 90 days a as s follows lot 1 A standard utah ration nation full fed check alfalfa hay bay first crop hand full fed twice daily plus grain ration of hand full twice daily plus block salt and water at free will mill first 15 days 1 part whole barley and I 1 part whole oats second 15 days 2 parts whole barley and I 1 part whole oats after 30 days all barley lot 2 A common utah ration second crop alfalfa same as check lot 1 except second crop alfalfa substituted for first crop lot 3 aluch A much used utah ration third crop superintendent of the project the experiment will begin november 16 15 continue go 90 days all of the lambs for the period previous to the experiment ex peri ment will be handled in one I 1 lot t and upon the sams same feed the lots will be firmly according to type quality condition age and weight group weights of the lambs will be taken on three successive days at the beginning at fifteen day intervals and at the conclusion of the investigation the average of the three days weights shall be taken as the weight for that period on the middle day the necessary equipment shall include individual ear tags for lambs wool paint decord sheets etc all feeds shall be given in two equal meals at six six a in and four p in so far as possible an analysis of all feeds shall be made at the same period during the progress of the investigation the fed troughs must be kept sweet and clean at all times and any feed grain or hay not eaten shall be weighed back lot 1 the check lot shall be the guide for the other lots as to the amounts of hay and grain fed the eye elre of f the experimental feeder and the judgment of the owner of the lambs shall be the guide for starting the lambs on feed and for increasing the amounts the lambs must not be disturbed or excited during the progress of the trial the experimental feeder will cooperate with the owner of the lambs and the county agent in handling visitors at the yards and in explaining the test A general welcome to visitors at the yards shall be extended on lamb feeders day november and also at the conclusion of the tests it is intended that the feeding work proper be followed up with studies of shrinkage in transit dressing ng percentage and quality and price in the carcass block salt and water shall be before all groups at free will the record of salt consumed shall he be included in the regular reports complete and detailed notes shall be taken by the experimental feeder upon all groups during the entire progress of th the e experiment the time required to consume the rations shall be ba taken regularly at ten day intervals the feeds must be uniform in variety and quality throughout the progress of the trial copies of the records and notes shall be kept complete and up to date by the superintendent and included in the regular monthly report to the utah experiment station sick or dead lambs may require substitutions from an extra lot for this purpose the eye judgment and experience peri ence of the experimental feeder must be the guide in maintaining the lambs on regular feed changes in the
